NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) * Main Campus: Kallam Anji Reddy (KAR) Campus, Hyderabad
- Network Tertiary Campuses: Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Bhubaneswar.
(LVPEI is globally recognized for its “Pyramid” model of eye care. The Retina department is a high-volume referral hub for complex posterior segment pathologies across South India and Odisha.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Stipend (2026 Scale): * Years 1 & 2: ₹50,000 / month
- Year 3: ₹70,000 / month
- Selection Process: Rigorous entrance exam followed by a technical interview.
- Campus Allotment: New for 2026, fellows are now permitted to choose their preferred parent campus (subject to merit and availability), moving away from the previous system of mandatory allotment by management.
DURATION & STRUCTURE
36 Months (3 Years) The program is divided into three distinct functional phases:
- Phase 1: Cataract Mastery (4–9 Months): * Intensive training to make you “bulletproof” in SICS and Phaco, including complication management.
- The Fast Track: If you prove surgical proficiency early, this phase can be shortened to 4 months. The “saved” time is then added to your final Specialty Phase.
- Phase 2: Secondary Centre Posting (12 Months – Fixed): * You are the sole in-charge of a high-volume peripheral center.
- Expect to perform 1,000+ cataracts this year. This is where you gain administrative and clinical independence.
- Phase 3: Core VR Specialty (15–20 Months): * Return to your parent tertiary campus for exclusive Vitreo-Retinal training.
- You continue to operate cataracts alongside your retina surgical list.
HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-On & ROP
- Progression: You start with modular steps and transition to independent surgeries. Most trainers are former fellows, ensuring a peer-to-peer teaching style.
- VR Volume: Exceptional. You will operate on a vast variety of cases, including complex PDR, tractional RDs, and endophthalmitis.
- ROP: One of the strongest programs in India for ROP. Unlike many other institutes, fellows here get hands-on for ROP lasers and intravitreal injections in neonates.
2. The “LVP Discipline” (Non-Negotiables)
- The 7:00 AM Rule: You must punch in before 7:00 AM. A punch at 7:01 AM results in an automatic “Absent” for the entire day.
- Leave Policy: 19 days/year. If you exceed this, the penalty is 2:1 (for every 1 extra day of leave, you must work 2 extra days at the end of your fellowship).
- Environment: Strictly Vegetarian campus. The work culture is high-pressure; OT days can frequently extend until 1:00 AM or later as the department operates on emergencies throughout the night.
3. Retention & Exit
- Drop-out Rate: Notoriously high due to the grueling schedule.
- The “Blacklist”: There are no financial penalties (fines) for quitting midway, but you are permanently blacklisted from the LVPEI network.
PERSONAL OPINION
LVPEI is the “Special Forces” of VR fellowships. It is a 3-year endurance test that strips away your personal life but replaces it with unparalleled clinical and surgical “muscle memory.” If you can survive the 7 AM punches and the midnight OTs, you will graduate not just as a surgeon, but as a consultant capable of running an entire retina department independently. It is the best choice for those with a “workaholic” temperament.
