24 Months (2 Years)
HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Inducts two fellows every two years via a personal interview. It is advisable to track the tenure of current fellows to time your application correctly.
- Mentorship: While there are four retina consultants, training is primarily centered under Dr. Divya (Specialist in Paediatric Retina).
- Surgical Hands-on:
- Timeline: Highly skill-dependent. If you demonstrate excellent tissue handling, you may start performing ports and sutures in the first month. Otherwise, the first 3–4 months are purely observational.
- Progression: Training is strictly steps-based. Because the patient base consists of paying/private patients, independent “start-to-finish” cases are virtually zero.
- Scope: You will gain hands-on experience in steps for Vitreous Hemorrhage (VH), Macular Holes, and Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachments (RRD). However, complex Tractional Retinal Detachments (TRD) are generally reserved for consultants.
- Medical Retina: Excellent exposure to diagnostics, retinal lasers, and intravitreal injections with plenty of “free” hands-on opportunities.
- Paediatric Retina & ROP: Even though the mentor is a paediatric retina specialist, ROP exposure is limited to screening. Because the paediatric wing is in a separate building, fellows generally do not get hands-on for ROP lasers or injections.
- Cataract Training: No Phacoemulsification or SICS training is included in the VR track.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Hours: Standard hospital hours; academics are largely self-driven with no fixed lecture schedule.
- Duties: Night calls once a week, Sunday duty once a month, and outreach camps approximately every two months.
PERSONAL OPINION
Little Flower Angamaly is a “Clinical & Steps” powerhouse. It is ideal for a fellow who wants to master the medical and diagnostic nuances of retina in a high-volume setting and is comfortable with a modular surgical learning curve. While you won’t graduate as an independent surgeon for complex RD cases, your technical proficiency in surgical steps and medical management will be very high. The non-toxic environment and high-quality equipment make it a solid choice, provided you are comfortable with the upfront admission fee.
