- NAME OF THE INSTITUTE: Shri Ganapati Netralaya (SGN), Jalna
- STIPEND: ₹64,000 per month (approx. per DNB/State norms)
- DURATION: 24 Months (Long-term)
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Growth: The program is recognized for providing a solid foundation in vitreoretinal surgery. Fellows typically experience a graded transition, starting with intensive assistance and moving toward performing independent surgeries like scleral buckling and vitrectomies by the second year.
- Clinical Gaps: While surgical hands-on is a highlight, the program faces some criticism regarding its medical retina and uvea departments. The exposure to advanced diagnostic interpretation and medical management in these specific sub-specialties is often noted as being less robust compared to the surgical side.
- Workload & Structure: The institute handles a massive patient volume, particularly from rural Maharashtra. While this provides “decent exposure” to complex pathology, it can lead to a heavy administrative and OPD load, sometimes at the expense of structured academic teaching sessions.
- Infrastructure: SGN is a state-of-the-art tertiary center. The diagnostic labs are well-equipped with FFA, ICG, and OCT, though the “hands-on” learning for these diagnostics depends heavily on the fellow’s own initiative due to a perceived lack of formal academic oversight in these areas.
PERSONAL OPINION
This center is ideal for candidates who are primarily “surgery-focused” and looking for a high-volume center to refine their operative skills. However, if your primary interest lies in the academic nuances of Medical Retina or Uveitis, you may find the curriculum lacking in depth compared to other premier national institutes.
