- The “Prabhu Sir” Dynamic:
- Training is primarily centered around the lead surgeon, Dr. Prabhu. He is described as a “cool-headed” and exceptionally fast surgeon.
- The Surgical Trade-off: Interestingly, because the lead surgeon often prioritizes complex Phaco cases, he is very generous in giving Retinal Surgery steps and full cases to fellows. He does not “hog” retinal cases, which is a significant advantage for hands-on experience.
- Surgical Hands-on:
- Efficiency is Key: To get surgical chances, fellows must clear the morning General OPD rapidly. If the OPD is not managed by the time the consultant finishes private patients and moves to OT, you may miss your surgical turns.
- Variety: Fellows report getting to perform a wide array of retinal procedures under a mentor who is supportive and non-toxic.
- Work Culture & Timings:
- Unmatched Work-Life Balance: Unlike almost every other VR fellowship in India (where fellows leave at 8:00 or 9:00 PM), Sankara Coimbatore VR often finishes by 6:00 PM. This is attributed to the surgical speed of the department head.
- Environment: Low toxicity; the relationship with the main consultant is professional and approachable.
- Academics:
- Minimal Structure: There are virtually no formal classes or academic sessions. Learning is 100% clinical and surgical.
- Clinical Autonomy: You are responsible for disposing of the OPD cases. You retain complex cases for discussion with the consultant after OT hours.
- Comparison with Other Branches:
- While Coimbatore offers the best work-life balance, the Sankara Guntur (Andhra Pradesh) branch is considered the “Gold Standard” within the group for structured academics and sheer surgical volume, though it is significantly more competitive and has longer working hours.
PERSONAL OPINION
Sankara Coimbatore VR is the “Surgical Efficiency Fellowship.” it is the ideal choice for a self-motivated surgeon who wants high-quality hands-on without the soul-crushing hours typical of the specialty. You won’t get “classroom teaching,” but you will learn to be a fast, decisive surgeon. If you can manage a busy OPD independently and value getting home by 6:00 PM to study on your own, this is arguably the hidden gem of the Sankara network.
