NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Kallam Anji Reddy (KAR) Campus, Hyderabad
(A global leader in pediatric eye care and the headquarters of the Jasti V Ramanamma Children’s Eye Care Centre, one of the largest pediatric ophthalmology facilities in the world.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Stipend (2026 Scale): * Months 1–24: ₹50,000
- Months 25–36: ₹70,000
- Selection Process: Online entrance examination (Comprehensive Ophthalmology) followed by a technical interview.
- Intake: Variable by campus; the main Hyderabad (KAR) campus typically takes 4–5 fellows, while regional campuses (Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada) take 1–2 fellows.
DURATION & STRUCTURE
36 Months (3 Years)
- Months 1–9 (Comprehensive Phase): One-month rotations through all sub-specialties + 2 months in Paediatric Ophthalmology. Focus is on mastering SICS, Phaco, Pterygium, and Intravitreal Injections.
- Months 10–21 (Secondary Centre Posting): You independently manage a peripheral center. This is where you build massive surgical volume (1,000+ surgeries/year), primarily SICS and Phaco.
- Months 22–36 (Specialty Phase): Exclusive Paediatric & Strabismus training at a tertiary campus.
HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-On (The LVP Standard)
- Strabismus: Unrivaled exposure. You get independent hands-on for both simple horizontal squints and complex strabismus (obliques, transpositions, re-operations).
- Paediatric Cataract: You can expect 50+ cases during your specialty phase. Training includes pediatric-specific techniques like primary posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy.
- ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity): Includes a 1-month dedicated rotation in the VR department. The focus is strictly on ROP Screening and staging. While you may perform some intravitreal injections, ROP lasers are generally reserved for VR faculty/fellows.
2. Clinical Specialization
- Neuro-Ophthalmology: A major highlight. At LVPEI, Neuro-Ophthal cases are exclusively managed by the Paediatric Ophthalmology department, ensuring you graduate with elite diagnostic skills in optic nerve disorders and ocular motility.
- Flexibility: The “LVP Culture” allows fellows to request short-term postings at other LVPEI campuses to shadow eminent faculty (e.g., traveling to Hyderabad from a regional campus to work with specific mentors).
3. Work Culture & Academics
- The “7 AM Rule”: Attendance is strictly monitored. You must be in the classroom/clinic by 7:00 AM.
- Academic Rigor: Daily morning classes (3 days general, 3 days specialty-specific).
- Environment: No “spoon-feeding.” You are expected to be a self-starter. There are no camp duties for fellows; the focus remains on tertiary-level clinical and surgical care.
- The “Fellow to Faculty” (F2F) Alternative: A 2-year specialty-only track. While it skips the secondary center year, it involves a 3-year post-fellowship bond and significantly lower cataract numbers compared to the 3-year track.
PERSONAL OPINION
LVPEI is the “Gold Standard for Career Independence.” The 3-year program is a marathon, but the 1,000+ surgeries during the secondary center year make you surgically bulletproof. For a Paediatric specialist, the added Neuro-Ophthal integration is a massive competitive advantage. It is the best choice for those aiming for a high-volume surgical career or a leadership role in a major institution.
