NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Sankara Nethralaya (SN), Main Campus (College Road), Chennai
(The historic headquarters of India’s premier eye institute, famous for its rigorous “Nethralaya” diagnostic protocols and high-end posterior segment imaging.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: ₹55,000 (Standardized for SN fellows in 2026).
- Selection Process: Competitive national-level written MCQ exam followed by a personal interview.
- Intake: Usually 1–2 fellows per session.
- Note: This is the 1-Year Medical Retina (MR) program, which is distinct from their 2-year Medical Retina & Uvea dual-specialty fellowship.
DURATION
12 Months (1 Year)
- Structure: 1-month orientation + 8 months of modular rotations + 3 months of Senior Residency (SR-ship).
HONEST REVIEW
- The “SR-ship” Phase (Final 3 Months): This is the peak of the training. During these three months, you are assigned a specific mentor and transition into a semi-independent role where your surgical and laser volumes significantly increase.
- Clinical Exposure: Elite.
- Rotations: Includes 1 month each of Uvea, Emergency, and Diagnostics, with 5 months spent in core Medical Retina units.
- OPD Volume: You tag along with various senior consultants. The variety of cases—from rare genetic dystrophies to complex diabetic complications—is considered the best in Asia.
- Hands-on & Procedures:
- Diagnostics: In the dedicated “Diagnostics” month, you perform high-volume B-scans (40–50 per day) and OCT/FFA/ICG interpretation.
- Lasers: During the SR-ship, you get 2–3 full days per week in the laser room. You can perform 20–25 lasers per day (PRP, Barrage, Focal).
- Injections: Intravitreal injections are strictly introduced during the final 3-month SR-ship.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- None. Unlike the 2-year MR+Uvea track, this 1-year program does not include cataract training.
- Work Culture & Schedule:
- Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Relatively balanced compared to the VR track).
- Environment: Noted for being non-toxic and professionally enriching.
- Duties: Monthly 24-hour emergency postings (7 PM to 7 PM). Occasional night emergency or ward duties (1–2 times a month). Sundays are generally free.
- Academics: World-class. Daily specialty classes and grand rounds.
PERSONAL OPINION
Sankara Nethralaya’s 1-year MR fellowship is a “Diagnostic & Laser Bootcamp.” It is the perfect choice for an ophthalmologist who wants to become a “Medical Retina Specialist” in a high-end private or corporate practice. While you don’t get cataract or vitrectomy training, the 3,000+ retinal lasers and thousands of B-scans you’ll perform/interpret in a year will make you a master of the posterior segment. It is short, financially sustainable, and carries immense weight on a CV.
