NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
ASG Eye Hospital, Mahmoorganj, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
(A high-tech tertiary hub within the ASG Eye Care network, specifically noted for its high-end diagnostic suite and structured surgical transition for posterior segment fellows.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Year 1: ₹60,000
- Year 2: ₹65,000
- Financial Note: This is among the highest stipends for VR fellowships in North India as of 2026.
- Selection Process: A single-day “Fast-Track” selection involving a written entrance exam followed immediately by a technical interview.
- Intake: 2 Fellows per session (Typically split into 1 Surgical VR and 1 Medical Retina track).
DURATION
24 Months (2 Years)
HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-On (The “Early Start” Model)
- Timeline: Unlike many premier institutes that wait 6 months, ASG Varanasi initiates procedural training almost immediately.
- Month 1: High-volume Intravitreal Injections.
- End of Month 1: Retinal Lasers (PRP, Barrage).
- VR Surgery: Hands-on begins as early as the second month. Training is modular:
- Initial Phase: Port making, Silicone Oil (SO) removal, and core vitrectomies.
- Advanced Phase: Progression to membrane peeling and detachment repair is strictly merit-based. High-performing fellows can expect independent cases toward the end of their second year.
- Cataract Training: Officially not included. However, if you enter with prior Phaco proficiency, you may be allowed a few cases per month to maintain your surgical “touch.”
2. Clinical Exposure & ROP
- OPD Volume: Rich and diverse. You will see a high volume of diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusions, and rhegmatogenous detachments.
- ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity): Decent exposure to screening and staging. While fellows are trained in the diagnostic aspect, intravitreal injections in neonates are generally not part of the fellow’s hands-on list at this branch.
3. Work Culture & Academics
- The “9-to-9” Grind: Expect a long 12-hour workday (9:00 AM – 9:00 PM) in the first year. Senior fellows (Year 2) often have slightly shifted hours (8:00 AM – 8:00 PM).
- Mentorship: You are trained by two dedicated senior retina consultants. This dual-mentor system provides exposure to different surgical “schools of thought.”
- Academics: Structured via Pan-India Zoom classes twice a week, connecting you with the national ASG faculty network.
- Duties: Night calls are shared on a rotational basis with fellows from other departments (Glaucoma, Cornea, etc.).
PERSONAL OPINION
ASG Varanasi is the “Procedural Accelerator.” It is the ideal choice for a candidate who wants to start “cutting” early and values a high stipend to offset the long working hours. While it lacks the academic “monastery” feel of an Aravind or LVPEI, it offers a pragmatic, corporate-surgical environment where your progress is limited only by your own manual dexterity. It is perfect for someone who is already a competent cataract surgeon and wants to dive straight into the posterior segment.
