Sankara Nethralaya (SN), Main Campus (College Road) & JCOC (Pammal), Chennai
(The premier academic and tertiary eye care center in India, globally recognized for its standardized “Nethralaya” protocols and clinical research.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: ₹55,000 (Competitive; one of the highest in the country).
- Selection Process: National-level written entrance exam (MCQs) followed by a personal interview for shortlisted candidates.
- Intake: 2–3 fellows every 6 months (January and July cycles).
DURATION
24 Months (2 Years)
- Structure: 1-month General Orientation + 17 months of Cornea specialty rotations + 6 months as a Senior Resident (SR).
HONEST REVIEW
- The “SR” Phase (Final 6 Months): A unique highlight of the SN fellowship. In the last 6 months, you function as a Senior Resident, seeing patients independently and managing your own surgical list. This period is crucial for transitioning from a “step-surgeon” to a decision-maker.
- Clinical Exposure: World-Class. You will be posted with different cornea consultants every month. You will see a massive volume of rare corneal dystrophies, complex ocular surface disorders (Chemical injuries, SJS), and advanced infections.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cornea):
- Modular Learning: Training follows a strict “steps” model. You master graft suturing and trephination before moving to full independent cases.
- Keratoplasty: You graduate as a confident independent corneal surgeon.
- Lamellar Surgery: While observational exposure to DALK/DSEK/PDEK is high, independent hands-on is limited and not guaranteed for every fellow.
- Refractive: High-volume workup and patient selection training. Refractive procedures are practiced in the wet lab, but independent hands-on on live patients is typically not provided to fellows.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- The JCOC Model: All cataract training happens at the Pammal camp hospital (JCOC).
- Volume: One case per week during your weekly postings, plus one dedicated full-month rotation.
- The “Phaco Gap”: Like the Comprehensive track, Phaco is only introduced in the final month, with a total of 30 cases. You will need post-fellowship refinement for high-volume Phaco.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Environment: Highly academic and very hectic. Consultants are approachable but maintain strict protocols.
- Calls: Weekly night duties (including emergency trauma and enucleation/eye bank calls) and monthly Sunday duties.
- Academics: Elite. Daily classes with PGs and sub-specialty seminars.
PERSONAL OPINION
Sankara Nethralaya is the “Harvard of Cornea” in India. If you want to be a specialist who can diagnose the most obscure corneal conditions and perform flawless Penetrating Keratoplasties, this is the gold standard. While the Refractive hands-on and Phaco volume are lower than at corporate centers like Agarwal’s or ASG, the clinical “eye” you develop here is unparalleled. It is the best program for those aiming for a career in academics or a tertiary referral practice.
