HONEST REVIEW
- The “Orientation” Phase: Be prepared for a 1.5-month mandatory rotation through all sub-specialty departments. While some find it long, it is designed to familiarize you with the “Agarwal system” before you settle into the Glaucoma unit.
- Surgical Hands-on (The “Foreign Trainee” Variable):
- Volume: Fellows can expect roughly 40–60 Phacos and 10–15 Trabeculectomies.
- The “Queue”: Because Chennai is a global hub, surgical cases are often prioritized for international short-term trainees first, then long-term fellows and PGs. This can sometimes lead to fluctuations in your monthly surgical numbers.
- Glaucoma Specialty: Good exposure to SICS-Trabs and combined procedures.
- Advanced Procedures: High observational exposure to MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery) and GATT. While regular wet lab training is provided, actual hands-on for these is rare—usually limited to one or two cases for exceptionally skilled fellows.
- Clinical Exposure & Research:
- OPD: Exceptional. Consultants are highly approachable, and you will see a massive volume of complex primary and secondary glaucomas.
- Research: Strong emphasis on documentation and publications. The institute has a dedicated research team that actively pushes fellows to present at national and international conferences.
- Lasers: Excellent numbers for YAG Peripheral Iridotomy (PI) and YAG Capsulotomies.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Hours: 7:30/8:30 AM – 5:30 PM. The day usually starts in the OT, with the specialty OPD following afterward.
- Duties: 1 Night duty, 1 Camp duty, and 1–2 Sunday duties per month. Expect to be professionally occupied for most of the month.
- Postings: Includes mandatory peripheral postings at other Agarwal branches.
PERSONAL OPINION
Agarwal’s Chennai is an “Academic & Diagnostic Powerhouse.” It is the ideal choice for an ophthalmologist who wants to build a strong research profile and master the medical management and diagnostics of glaucoma using the world’s latest imaging tech. While the surgical numbers for Trabeculectomy are lower than at “surgical factories” like Aravind or SNC, the exposure to MIGS, Glued IOLs, and complex cases makes you a very sophisticated clinician.
