HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-On (The “Comprehensive” Advantage)
- Phacoemulsification: This is a standout program for surgical volume. A fellow entering with basic SICS skills can expect to perform 600+ independent Phacos over two years.
- Refractive Surgery: Unlike many other fellowships where refractive is observation-only, Varanasi ASG provides independent hands-on for LASIK and other laser vision correction procedures.
- Cross-Specialty Exposure: This is a “hidden gem” feature. While the primary track is Phaco-Refractive, the hospital encourages multi-specialty participation. Fellows report getting independent turns in:
- Glaucoma: Phaco-Trabeculectomy.
- Retina: Retinal lasers, Intravitreal injections, and even steps in Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV) like port making.
- Oculoplastics: DCR and basic eyelid procedures.
- Strabismus: Squint surgeries.
2. Clinical Exposure & Training
- Breadth: You are rotated through all specialty departments. This ensures you graduate not just as a cataract surgeon, but as a well-rounded consultant capable of managing a comprehensive OPD.
- Technology: Access to advanced diagnostic tools and refractive platforms (e.g., Contoura Vision, Femto-LASIK).
3. Work Culture & Schedule
- The “ASG Timing”: Standard across all ASG centers is 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. This is a long workday, though the pace is often less frantic than “surgical factories” like Aravind.
- Environment: Noted for being non-toxic and friendly. Consultants are approachable and often treat fellows as junior colleagues rather than subordinates.
- Duties: Sunday duties are mandatory, but the hospital provides compensatory weekly offs.
PERSONAL OPINION
ASG Varanasi is a “Surgeon’s Playground.” It is one of the few places in North India where a Phaco fellow can gain legitimate hands-on experience in Retina and Oculoplastics alongside their core specialty. The 12-hour workday is the only significant hurdle. It is ideal for a candidate who wants to be a “Super-Generalist”—someone who can confidently market themselves as a Phaco-Refractive expert while still being able to handle a Trabeculectomy or a DCR.
