HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Inducts one fellow per session via a formal interview. The program is tailored for clinical and surgical refinement in a high-end private practice setting.
- Phase 1 (Months 1–3): Focus is on OPD management and diagnostics. Hands-on medical retina interventions, specifically retinal lasers, typically commence by the second month.
- Surgical Progression: Surgical “steps” are introduced from the third month onwards. Training includes complex maneuvers such as macular surgery steps and Internal Limiting Membrane (ILM) peeling.
- Surgical Limitations: Because the patient base consists primarily of private cases, opportunities for full, independent “start-to-finish” surgeries are rare. Fellows graduate with high proficiency in surgical segments but may lack independent volume.
- Clinical Breadth: Offers a high-density OPD with diverse retinal pathologies. However, specialized exposure is limited: ROP cases are infrequent, and Ocular Oncology cases are typically referred to the affiliated charity hospital.
- Ancillary Training: No Phacoemulsification training is provided. The focus remains strictly on the posterior segment, including intravitreal injections and lasers (though laser volumes are moderate compared to charitable centers).
- Work Culture & Hours: The environment is professional and non-toxic. Workdays are long, starting at 9:00 AM and often extending to 8:00 PM for OPD or 9:00 PM on surgical days.
- Quality of Life: A significant advantage for Delhi-based fellows is the absence of night calls, Sunday duties, or outreach camp requirements.
- Academics: Includes mandatory weekly classes to ensure theoretical grounding alongside clinical work.
PERSONAL OPINION
This fellowship is an elite “Surgical Refinement” program. It is best suited for candidates who want to learn the nuances of vitreoretinal surgery and ILM peeling from top-tier consultants in a sophisticated environment. While you will master the “steps” of complex surgeries and clinical decision-making, you should anticipate needing a high-volume “booster” or a senior residency afterward if your goal is immediate, total surgical independence in a high-volume setup.
