NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Ahalia Foundation Eye Hospital, Palakkad, Kerala
(A JCI and NABH accredited vast campus located in the scenic “Ahalia Health Heritage Knowledge Village”.)
COMPENSATION & CONTRACT (THE “AHALIA MODEL”)
Ahalia follows a unique three-phase career trajectory. It is less of a “pure fellowship” and more of a long-term institutional commitment.
- Phase 1: Pre-Fellowship (1 Year)
- Role: Medical Officer / OP Doctor.
- Surgical Hands-on: Zero. Focus is purely on clinical workups and OPD.
- Salary: ₹80,000 / month.
- Phase 2: Fellowship (12–18 Months)
- Salary: Drops to ₹30,000 / month (reflecting the training cost).
- Phase 3: Mandatory Bond (1.5 Years)
- Salary: ₹1,20,000 / month.
- Penalty: Breaking this bond costs ₹10 Lakhs.
DURATION & TRACKS
- Phaco Fellowship: 12 Months
- Glaucoma Fellowship: 18 Months
- Medical Retina (Add-on): 3 Months (Available after completing the primary fellowship).
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Training (Cataract):
- Volume: Strong foundation. You start with SICS for the first 6–7 months.
- Phacoemulsification: Transition occurs in the final 4–6 months. Expect a minimum of 50–60 Phaco cases.
- Advanced Skills: Proficiency in managing complications and performing anterior vitrectomies is integrated. Notably, all cases are video-recorded and reviewed by mentors for feedback.
- Specialty Hands-on:
- Glaucoma: In addition to cataract volume, Glaucoma fellows typically perform around 5 Trabeculectomies.
- Medical Retina: During the 3-month add-on, fellows perform retinal lasers and intravitreal injections. Some high-performers transition to topical phaco during this period.
- Clinical Exposure: Excellent. Because all fellows share the same OPD workup, you gain diagnostic experience across all sub-specialties.
- Work Culture & Environment:
- Hours: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM (OT focus), rarely extending past 5:00 PM.
- Academics: Minimal formal classes. The program is heavily self-driven; you are expected to study theory independently.
- Location: The Palakkad campus is vast and self-contained but quiet. Most fellows travel to Coimbatore (1 hour away) for weekend recreation.
PERSONAL OPINION
Ahalia is a “Financial & Career Stability” play. It is perfect for an ophthalmologist who wants a guaranteed job for nearly 4 years with a decent salary for most of that duration. While the “Pre-fellowship” year is surgically stagnant, the total Phaco volume and the recorded surgical reviews ensure high-quality training. However, the ₹10 Lakh bond and the total 4-year commitment (Pre-fellowship + Fellowship + Bond) make it a long road compared to 18-month programs elsewhere.
