HONEST REVIEW
- Intake: Highly selective, with usually only one fellow inducted per session.
- Cataract Training: * A significant pro is the integrated Phaco training.
- Year 1: Focuses on mastering SICS.
- Year 2: Transition to Phacoemulsification, with a steady volume of approximately 2 cases per week.
- Cornea Surgical Hands-on:
- Keratoplasty: Exposure is considered moderate to conservative. Fellows typically perform around 20 Penetrating Keratoplasties (PKs), often in a modular “steps-based” manner.
- Other Procedures: Excellent hands-on for C3R, AMG, and Pterygium surgeries.
- Advanced Cornea: While there is exposure to Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK/DSEK) and Refractive Surgery (LASIK/PRK), these are observational only, with no independent hands-on provided.
- Clinical Exposure: Excellent. Giridhar is a major referral hub, ensuring fellows see a wide variety of complex corneal infections, dystrophies, and ocular surface disorders in the OPD.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Night Duties: 3–4 times per month. Fellows act as the second-on-call alongside PGs, providing a supportive environment for managing emergencies.
- Other Duties: Sunday duty once a month and outreach camp duties approximately once every two months.
- Enucleation: Mandatory attendance for enucleation calls as part of eye bank training.
- Academics: Structured learning with regular specialty classes conducted once a week.
PERSONAL OPINION
Giridhar Eye Hospital offers a “Clinically Balanced” fellowship. It is an ideal choice for a candidate who wants a strong diagnostic foundation and a guaranteed, steady flow of Phaco training alongside their specialty. While it may not offer the high-volume independent lamellar surgery of a purely corneal research institute, the quality of mentorship and the non-toxic, academic environment make it a very prestigious addition to an ophthalmologist’s CV.
