HONEST REVIEW
1. The “Secondary Centre” Foundation
- Autonomy: This is the “soul” of the LVPEI fellowship. You independently run a peripheral center, building the clinical and administrative skills needed to manage a practice.
- Surgical Volume: You will be operating every day for a year. By the time you reach this phase, you are expected to be independent in managing SICS, Phaco, and their common complications.
2. Clinical & Surgical Rigor
- Standards: LVPEI has a zero-tolerance policy for documentation lapses. Surgical times are monitored, and complications must be meticulously recorded. You cannot “fake” outcomes; the system is designed for absolute transparency.
- Exposure: Unmatched. You see the entire spectrum of eye disease, from primary refractive errors to rare genetic pathologies.
3. Work Culture (The “Workaholic” Haven)
- Timings: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM (or whenever the OT list ends). You are expected to punch in before 7:00 AM daily.
- Holidays: Extremely limited (10–15 days per year). Personal time is virtually non-existent.
- Hierarchy: Interestingly, the institute is noted for having a non-rigid hierarchy. Senior consultants and even the founding leadership are highly approachable via email and in person for case discussions.
4. Academics
- Structure: Very strong. Mandatory morning classes, grand rounds, and journal clubs. Attendance is strictly monitored and factored into evaluations.
PERSONAL OPINION
LVPEI is not just a fellowship; it is a “Lifestyle Reset.” It is the ideal choice for an ophthalmologist who wants to be part of a world-class system and is willing to sacrifice personal life for 3 years of elite training. It is often described as “repeating PG all over again” due to the rules and rigor. If you are seeking only a certificate, avoid LVP. If you want to become a surgeon-leader who can run a center anywhere in the world, there is no better place.
