HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Fit: Selection is via interview. While theoretical knowledge is assessed, the panel prioritizes clinical communication and “soft skills,” as the fellow primarily manages a high volume of private, often high-expectation patients.
- Surgical Progression: The program utilizes a “camp-to-private” pipeline. After an initial orientation, surgical hands-on begins in the second month. Phacoemulsification starts at a modest pace (2–4 cases/month) and scales up based on demonstrated surgical proficiency.
- Refractive & Advanced Cornea: This is a standout program for refractive surgery. Fellows can expect 50–60 hands-on cases involving LASIK flaps, PRK, SMILE, and the newer SILK platform. In cornea, there is a strong institutional preference for DMEK over DSEK/DSAEK.
- Clinical Workflow: A balanced “3-day OT” week. Fellows generally manage OPD in the morning and transition to the OT in the evening.
- Work-Life Balance: Exceptionally fellow-friendly. There are no mandatory night duties or emergency calls (handled by DNB residents). Sundays are off unless Saturday post-op rounds are required.
- Research & Academics: Features a dedicated “Half-Day” weekly for research, allowing fellows to collaborate on consultant-led studies or independent papers. Structured theory classes are held once a week for all sub-specialties.
- Culture: The environment is professional and non-toxic. Consultants are highly approachable, providing a mentorship-driven experience rather than a high-pressure residency atmosphere.
PERSONAL OPINION
This is a “Premium Practice” fellowship. It is ideally suited for candidates who want to master the latest refractive technologies (SMILE/SILK) and advanced endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in a high-end private setting. While the raw cataract volume may be lower than in charitable “mass-surgery” centers, the quality of training, equipment, and lifestyle makes it a top-tier choice for those aiming for urban private practice.
