HONEST REVIEW
- Selection: Conducted every six months via a written MCQ exam followed by a same-day interview. Intake is variable based on current vacancies.
- Cataract Training:
- 3-Year Track: Heavily front-loaded with cataract surgery. Training starts with 80–100 SICS cases before transitioning to Phacoemulsification.
- 2-Year Track: Significantly lower cataract volumes compared to the “Sandwich” program.
- Glaucoma Surgical Curve: Fellows receive consistent hands-on for Trabeculectomies (approx. 15–20 cases) and combined Phaco-Trabs. Advanced trainees get exposure to MIGS and Tube Shunts, starting with steps and progressing to full cases based on demonstrated proficiency.
- Lasers & Diagnostics: Exceptional clinical depth. Fellows perform a high volume of laser procedures, particularly Peripheral Iridotomies (PI), and manage complex glaucoma cases.
- Complication Management: Learning is “on the go.” After observing consultants manage initial complications, fellows are encouraged to troubleshoot and manage their own surgical challenges as they gain seniority.
- Clinical Workflow: Hours are typically 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The OPD volume is manageable and academically rewarding.
- Rotations & Duties: This is a rotation-heavy program. Fellows spend only a few months at the main Delhi center, with 1–2 month postings across various peripheral centers. Duties include one night call, one Sunday duty, and one outreach camp per month.
PERSONAL OPINION
SCEH offers a “choose your own adventure” model. The 3-year program is a fantastic deal for those who want to be subsidized while becoming masters of both high-volume cataract and specialty glaucoma. Conversely, the 1-year program is a high-cost, high-speed surgical “finishing school” for established surgeons. The 2-year track is a middle ground but has a significantly lower stipend, making it a harder financial sell for some. Regardless of the track, the exposure to MIGS and Tubes at a charitable price point (for the longer tracks) is a rare find in India.
