NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
MGM Eye Institute, Raipur (Chhattisgarh)
STIPEND
- Type: Paid Skill-Enhancement Training (Candidate-funded).
- Accommodation: Available on-campus for an additional fee.
DURATION
1 to 2 Months (Strict 60-day maximum limit for short-term tracks).
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Frequency: The program follows a steady “case-a-day” model. Once the trainee demonstrates independent surgical competence, the volume may be increased to two SICS cases per operative session.
- Instructional Quality: Training is overseen by dedicated faculty (notably a senior female consultant) who is deeply committed to ensuring trainees master the SICS technique. However, the teaching style is rigorous; trainees are expected to stay sharp, as failure to answer clinical questions during sessions can lead to strict reprimands.
- Daily Workflow: Official hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. While hands-on cases are typically scheduled in the afternoon (post-lunch), trainees are required to remain in the OT for the full day to observe and assist.
- Academic Integration: Short-term trainees are integrated into the hospital’s formal academic structure. Attendance at Wednesday and Saturday classes (alongside PGs and long-term fellows) is mandatory.
- Operating Schedule: Surgical training is provided Monday through Saturday, with Sundays reserved as off-days.
- Advanced Track Prerequisite: For those interested in their Phacoemulsification course, the institute maintains a strict entry barrier: a documented minimum of 200 independent SICS cases.
PERSONAL OPINION
MGM Raipur is a “discipline-first” institute. It is an excellent choice for a surgeon who thrives under firm, structured mentorship and wants a safe environment to transition into independent SICS. The strict academic expectations ensure you don’t just learn “how” to operate, but also “why.” It is best suited for those who are willing to put in the hours in the OT and can handle constructive (albeit firm) criticism.
