NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Uma Eye Clinic, Anna Nagar, Chennai
(A premium, tech-forward private eye hospital in Chennai, known for its focus on high-end refractive outcomes and advanced surgical platforms.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: Competitive for private Chennai clinics (Typically ₹30,000 – ₹40,000; subject to 2026 updates).
- Selection Process: Based on a personal interview. The clinic looks for candidates with “clarity of intent” and a strong foundational interest in refractive surgery.
- Intake: Usually 2–3 fellows per session.
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
(Note: Recently extended from the previous 12-month format to allow for more consistent surgical volume.)
HONEST REVIEW
- Technology & Diagnostics: This is the program’s strongest suit. The clinic is equipped with a high-end diagnostic suite:
- Imaging: Nikon Daytona, OCT, iTrace (Ray Tracing Aberrometry), and Sirius.
- Ocular Surface: Lipiflow and Lipiscan.
- Refractive: Experience with Presbyond (Laser Blended Vision) workups and patient selection for obtaining 6/6 N6 uncorrected vision.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- The 3D Advantage: Your first 20–30 cases are performed using a 3D operating microscope. This is highly praised by past fellows for accelerating confidence and mastering depth perception.
- Volume: Fellows can expect roughly 150 Phacos over 1.5 years (averaging 1–2 cases per week).
- Platforms: Training on top-tier machines like the Alcon Centurion and Johnson & Johnson Whitestar Signature Pro.
- Advanced Tools: Hands-on experience with CTR (Capsular Tension Rings), pupil expansion devices, and various phaco tips/toric alignments.
- Surgical Hands-on (Refractive & Cornea):
- Refractive: Approx. 4–5 LASIK (Femto and Microkeratome), 1–2 SMILE, and several PRK procedures.
- Cornea: Hands-on for 5–6 C3R cases. Observational exposure to FLACS (Femto-Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery) and corneal transplants.
- The “External Trainee” Variable: Like many Chennai centers, foreign candidates occasionally join for short-term high-volume training. During these specific weeks, your surgical allotment may drop, but reviewers note it typically “balances out” over the long term.
- Work Culture & Schedule:
- Hours: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM (A “grind” with a packed schedule).
- Duties: Alternating between OT and OPD. One Sunday a month for outreach camps. No night duties.
- Holidays: Very strict—only 2 holidays per year (excluding Sundays).
PERSONAL OPINION
Uma Eye Clinic is an “Advanced Tech Boutique” fellowship. It is ideal for a surgeon who is less concerned about “raw numbers” (like the 500+ SICS in trust hospitals) and more focused on premium outcomes. The use of 3D microscopy and iTrace aberrometry makes you a very modern surgeon. You will exit this fellowship feeling comfortable with high-end IOLs (Trifocals/Torics) and the latest refractive platforms.
