NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Sankara Nethralaya (SN), Main Campus (College Road), Chennai
(The Binocular Vision & Paediatric Ophthalmology department at SN is one of the oldest and most academically rigorous in India, founded by pioneers in the field.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: ₹55,000
- Selection Process: National-level written MCQ exam followed by a personal interview.
- Intake: 2 fellows per year (Inducted in January and July cycles).
- Competition: High; SN is a preferred destination for those aiming for academic or tertiary paediatric practice.
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
- Structure: 1-month Orientation + 4 months of Multi-specialty Rotations + 10 months of Core Paediatric/Strabismus Posting + 3 months of Senior Residency (SR).
HONEST REVIEW
- The Clinical Foundation:
- Rotations: Includes 1 month in Retina, 2 months in Neuro-Ophthalmology (highly valued for strabismus workups), and 1 month in Oculoplasty.
- OPD Volume: Massive. You see a vast variety of congenital cataracts, complex strabismus, amblyopia, and genetic eye disorders.
- Surgical Hands-on (Strabismus):
- Volume: Fellows typically perform approximately 30 squint cases.
- Independence: Strictly modular. You are generally allotted one muscle or one eye per case, even toward the end of the fellowship.
- Scope: Mostly “simple” squints (Horizontal R&Rs, plications). Independent “start-to-finish” complex cases are rare unless they are charitable/camp patients.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- Paediatric Cataract: Fellows perform roughly 5–10 cases.
- Technique: Primarily Blumenthal SICS; there is no Phacoemulsification training in this specialty track.
- The “SR” Phase (Final 3 Months): You transition into a Senior Resident role, seeing patients independently in the OPD and posting surgical cases in your name, which provides a crucial taste of clinical autonomy.
- Work Culture & Research:
- Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Relatively balanced but clinically “hectic”).
- Research: One day per week is strictly allotted for research and paper work. SN has a very strong publication culture.
- Environment: Professional and non-toxic.
PERSONAL OPINION
Sankara Nethralaya’s Paediatric fellowship is a “Clinical & Academic Gold Standard.” It is the ideal choice for someone who wants to master the sensory and motor workup of complex strabismus and the medical management of paediatric eye disease. While the surgical volume for squints is lower and less “independent” than at institutes like Aravind or LVPEI, the Neuro-Ophthalmology and Binocular Vision training you receive here is unparalleled. You graduate as an elite diagnostician who may need a short surgical “finishing” stint to gain high-volume speed.
