NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Aravind Eye Hospital, Anna Nagar, Madurai
(The historic headquarters and birthplace of the Aravind Eye Care System. It is the highest-volume center in the network and a global leader in treating infectious keratitis.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Stipend (2026): ₹40,000 (Year 1) | ₹50,000 (Year 2).
- Selection: Mandatory direct observation (trade test) and interview.
- Note: The Madurai Cornea department has the largest fellow intake in the system, which can lead to a crowded clinical environment but offers unmatched peer-learning opportunities.
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
- The “Peripheral” Clause: Depending on your entry-level SICS skills, you may be required to serve a 6-month to 1-year “service posting” at a secondary Aravind center before starting your core Cornea tenure in Madurai.
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Hands-on (Cornea):
- Keratoplasty (KP): You are guaranteed high numbers, typically 50+ Penetrating Keratoplasties (PK), split between therapeutic (for ulcers) and optical cases.
- Lamellar Surgery: This remains a major bottleneck. Independent hands-on for DALK, DSAEK, or DMEK is not standard and is usually reserved for a select few based on the Chief’s discretion.
- Ocular Surface: High volume of Pterygium with CAG, C3R, and AMG. However, advanced procedures like SLET are generally not part of the fellow’s surgical log.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- Technique: SICS only. Madurai Cornea fellowship does not provide Phaco training.
- Volume: Highly variable. Your allotment depends on your speed and complication rate. At Madurai, the OT sisters (nursing staff) carry significant influence in the surgical flow—maintaining a good professional rapport with them is essential for getting called to the table.
- Clinical Exposure:
- “Ulcer Capital”: Due to the rural agricultural patient base, you will see an astronomical number of fungal and bacterial keratitis cases. It is clinically exhausting but makes you an expert in medical management.
- Diagnostics: Access to world-class imaging including Pentacam, AS-OCT (Visante/Optovue), Specular Microscopy, and C-Microscopy (Confocal).
- Refractive Services:
- Observation Only: Fellows get a 1-week rotation in the Refractive suite.
- 2026 Update: The center has now upgraded to SMILE Pro and Femto-LASIK platforms, but hands-on remains strictly for consultants.
PERSONAL OPINION
Aravind Madurai is the “Infectious Disease Bootcamp.” It is the ideal program for someone who wants to master Penetrating Keratoplasty and the clinical management of complex ulcers. However, the lack of Phaco and Lamellar hands-on is a significant disadvantage compared to the 2-year programs at LVPEI or MM Joshi. To be a complete modern surgeon, most Madurai graduates find it necessary to do a Short-Term Phaco Course immediately following their fellowship.
