NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Sankara Nethralaya (SN), Main Campus (College Road) & JCOC (Pammal), Chennai
(Widely regarded as the “Mecca of Ophthalmology” in India, SN is world-renowned for its academic rigor, diagnostic excellence, and standardized protocols.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: ₹55,000 (One of the highest stipends for an 18-month track in India).
- Selection Process: Highly competitive. Includes a national-level written entrance exam followed by a personal interview for shortlisted candidates.
- Intake: Extremely limited; only one fellow is typically inducted per session.
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
- Structure: 1-month orientation + 17 months of specialty rotations.
HONEST REVIEW
- The “Clinical Gold Standard”: * The primary strength of SN is diagnostics. You rotate through every specialty department (Retina, Cornea, Glaucoma, etc.) for one month each.
- You are trained to perform a “Nethralaya-style” workup, which is respected globally. The clinical volume and variety of rare pathologies are unmatched.
- Surgical Hands-on (The JCOC Model):
- Main Hospital: There is zero surgical hands-on for Comprehensive fellows at the main SN hospital.
- JCOC (Jagadguru Kanchi Mahaswami Eye Centre): This is the community/camp hospital where all surgical training occurs. You get three separate rotations here.
- SICS: The program guarantees 100 SICS cases.
- Phacoemulsification: This is the program’s primary limitation. Phaco is only introduced during the final month (your 3rd JCOC rotation), with a limit of approximately 30 cases.
- Complexity: Training is focused on routine cases; there is no formal training for “rock hard” cataracts or advanced complication management in this track.
- Other Procedures:
- Good volume for Pterygium surgeries and Yag Capsulotomies. Beyond these, independent specialty surgeries (like Trabeculectomy or DCR) are generally not allotted to Comprehensive fellows.
- Work Culture & Acadics:
- Environment: Extremely hectic. Expect long hours and a high-pressure academic atmosphere.
- Teaching: You are mentored directly by some of the finest consultants in the country.
- Academics: Elite. Fellows attend daily classes with PGs and must clear monthly internal exams.
PERSONAL OPINION
Sankara Nethralaya is a “Diagnostic Masterclass” but a “Surgical Compromise.” If your goal is to become an elite diagnostician and academician, there is no better place in Asia. However, if your priority is to graduate as a high-volume Phaco surgeon, the 30-case limit is a significant drawback compared to other Chennai institutes like MN or Agarwal’s. This fellowship is perfect for someone who plans to join a group practice where they will be the “diagnostic lead” or as a stepping stone to a super-specialty fellowship later.
