NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
MN Eye Hospital, Tondiarpet & Adyar, Chennai
(A high-volume training hub in North Chennai, well-regarded for providing early surgical autonomy to postgraduates and fellows.)
STIPEND
- Months 1–12: ₹30,000
- Months 13–18: ₹35,000
- Financial Policy: Standard for private charitable setups in Chennai; covers local living expenses.
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Admission is on a “need basis” rather than a fixed academic calendar. The hospital maintains a database of applicants and calls for interviews when a vacancy arises.
- Surgical Hands-on (The “Fast-Track” Phaco):
- Timeline: Unlike many 2-year programs that delay Phaco until the second year, MN Eye starts you on Phacoemulsification as soon as you prove your competency in SICS.
- Volume: You are guaranteed a minimum of 100 Phacos over the 18-month tenure. Fellows who master SICS early often exceed this number significantly.
- Independence: The “Camp OT” system allows fellows to operate independently on a wide variety of cataracts.
- Sub-Specialty Rotations:
- As a Comprehensive fellow, you rotate through all departments.
- Cornea Focus: The Cornea exposure is notably more extensive than other specialties at this branch, providing strong skills in managing ulcers and ocular surface trauma.
- Work Culture & Schedule:
- Hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Relatively balanced).
- Environment: Described as non-toxic and “not too hectic,” allowing for a better learning-to-work ratio than some larger corporate chains.
- Sundays: Generally off. However, if DNB residents are unavailable (e.g., during exams), fellows may be required to assist with the workup of patients coming from outreach camps.
- Academics: Strong emphasis on learning with regularly scheduled theory classes and case presentations.
PERSONAL OPINION
MN Eye’s Comprehensive fellowship is a “Practical Career Starter.” It is the ideal choice for an ophthalmologist who wants to become a “generalist-plus”—someone who is surgically independent in Phaco and SICS but also has a solid clinical grasp of corneal diseases. The 18-month duration is a sweet spot: it’s longer than a short-term course but shorter than the standard 2-year commitment, getting you into private practice or a consultancy role faster.
