NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
MN Eye Hospital, Tondiarpet (Main) & Adyar, Chennai
(A high-volume tertiary center known for its robust community outreach and hands-on surgical training for postgraduates and fellows.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: Competitive for Chennai (Typically ₹30,000 – ₹40,000; subject to 2026 updates).
- Selection Process: Based on a personal interview. The institute recruits on a “need basis” rather than a fixed academic calendar.
- Trainer Profile: You are trained by the most experienced available surgeon; this could be a senior Fellow or a senior PG. However, refractive and advanced cornea training is directly mentored by Dr. Nishant (Head of Cornea).
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- Early Start: If you are proficient in SICS, you can start Phaco training as early as the 2nd month.
- Volume: Massive. Because senior consultants primarily handle private “paying” cases, the entire Camp OT list is managed by fellows and PGs. You will operate on a vast variety of cataract grades.
- Short-Term Trainee Dynamic: While the hospital trains many international short-term Phaco candidates, the long-term fellow’s cases are never compromised. In fact, since senior fellows eventually help train the short-termers, the hospital fast-tracks your mastery.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cornea & Keratoplasty):
- Timeline: You start Keratoplasty (KP) steps in the early months, progressing from corneal suturing to independent trephination and full procedures.
- Lamellar Surgery: While the volume for DALK/DSEK is lower, the Cornea head is proactive in providing wet lab sessions to ensure you learn the techniques.
- Enucleation: Cornea fellows are specifically responsible for eye donation/enucleation calls.
- Surgical Hands-on (Refractive):
- Rotations: You are posted 2–3 times a week at the hospital’s specialized refractive center.
- Procedures: Excellent hands-on for Trans-PRK, SMILE, LASIK, and Femto-LASIK under direct supervision.
- Clinical Exposure:
- Ulcers: Extremely high volume of diverse corneal ulcers (fungal, bacterial, viral). While clinically excellent, the sheer volume can become “tiresome” due to the intense follow-up required.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Atmosphere: Hectic but non-toxic. Work generally wraps up by 7:00 PM.
- Calls: Night duties are shared with PGs. Fellows are generally exempt from Sunday camp duties unless there is a shortage of PGs (e.g., during exams).
PERSONAL OPINION
MN Eye Hospital is a “Surgical Greenhouse.” It is one of the few places where the “Camp OT” system works entirely in favor of the fellow’s numbers. It is ideal for someone who wants to reach surgical independence in Phaco and LASIK very quickly. While you may be trained by senior peers initially, the sheer volume of “hands-on” time is significantly higher than in more “consultant-heavy” corporate hospitals.
