NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Sadguru Netra Chikitsalaya (SNC), Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh
(A legendary high-volume charitable institution, internationally recognized for its surgical training and vast clinical output.)
STIPEND & PERKS
- 2-Year Track: ₹50,000 (Year 1), ₹60,000 (Year 2).
- 3-Year Track: ₹50,000 (Year 1), ₹60,000 (Year 2), ₹70,000 (Year 3).
- Accommodation: Fellows are provided with single AC rooms on campus.
- Food: Meals are typically provided and not deducted from the stipend.
- The “Trial” Month: The first month is an observation period. You can exit without penalty.
- Bond: Resigning after the first month incurs a ₹2,00,000 penalty.
DURATION & TRACKS
SNC offers two distinct pathways for Vitreo-Retinal (VR) training:
- 2-Year Program: Purely Vitreo-Retinal focus; no Phaco/Cataract training included.
- 3-Year Program: Includes comprehensive Phacoemulsification training alongside the VR curriculum.
- Research Buffer: New fellows may occasionally be asked to do 3–6 months of research/ward work initially to stagger passing-out dates and optimize case allotment.
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Hands-on (The “Gold Standard”):
- Progression: Unlike many premier institutes that limit fellows to “surgical steps” for the entire duration, SNC transitions you to independent surgeries once proficiency is shown.
- Timeline: The first 6 months are dedicated to Medical Retina (massive volume of lasers and intravitreal injections).
- Advanced Surgery: Training moves from Silicone Oil Removal (SOR) to Core Vitrectomy, then to Retinal Detachment (RD) and Macular Hole surgeries. By the end of the fellowship, cases are posted in the fellow’s own name.
- Paediatric Retina & ROP:
- Exposure: Rated as “good.” Fellows perform ROP lasers in babies and may receive hands-on for intravitreal injections in ROP cases toward the end of their tenure.
- Clinical Exposure:
- Volume: “Hectic++.” Due to the massive rural referral base, you will see almost every textbook retinal pathology in high density.
- Work Culture & Schedule:
- Hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
- Environment: Intense but non-toxic.
- Duties: High quality of life regarding calls—no routine night or Sunday duties unless an emergency Endophthalmitis case arrives.
- Academics: Strong academic backbone with 4 classes per week and weekly common rounds with all consultants.
PERSONAL OPINION
SNC Chitrakoot is one of the top 3 VR fellowships in India for pure surgical independence. It is a “hidden gem” compared to more famous institutes because it allows fellows to cross the threshold from “assistant” to “lead surgeon” before they graduate. If you choose the 3-year track, you exit as a rare “Double Threat”—a high-volume Phaco surgeon and an independent Vitreo-Retinal surgeon. The on-campus perks (AC rooms and food) make the intense workload very sustainable.
