NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Sadguru Netra Chikitsalaya (SNC), Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh
(A legendary high-volume charitable institution, one of the largest in India, famous for its massive outreach and “Sadguru” training model.)
STIPEND & COMPENSATION
- Stipend Structure (Pre-2026): ₹50k (Year 1), ₹60k (Year 2), ₹80k (Year 3).
- 2026 Update: The structure has been modified. Expect a revised stipend for the 2-year training phase and a consultant-grade salary for the final 1-year mandatory service/consultancy.
- Benefits: Known for providing subsidized or free on-campus accommodation and meals, given the remote nature of Chitrakoot.
DURATION
36 Months (3 Years)
(New 2026 Policy: 2 Years Fellowship + 1 Year Mandatory Consultancy)
HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: SNC is a “Fellowship Factory” in the best sense, taking 4–5 fellows every 6 months. Selection is primarily through a personal interview focusing on clinical foundation and commitment to rural service.
- The “SNC Curve” (Surgical Progression):
- Year 1 (The Foundation): The first year involves rotations across different specialties (Retina, Glaucoma, Cornea, etc.) every 2 months. OT is infrequent initially (approx. once a week), focusing on mastering SICS.
- Year 2 (The Transition): OT frequency increases. Once SICS is perfected, Phacoemulsification is introduced (typically around the 1.5-year mark).
- Year 3 (The Mastery): This is where the volume explodes. Fellows start with ~10 Phacos per week, eventually rising to 24+ cases per week. By the end of the final year, most fellows have completed 600+ independent Phaco cases.
- Surgical Breadth: You aren’t just doing “easy” cases. Due to the nature of camp patients, you will master hard cataracts, PXF, small pupils, and mature lenses. Training includes managing complications (anterior vitrectomy) and secondary IOLs like iris claws.
- Clinical Workload:
- Peak Season: During the winter “Camp Season,” the hospital becomes a beehive of activity. Timings stretch from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
- Work-Life Balance: Surprisingly good for a high-volume center—no night duties and no Sunday duties (except for morning post-op rounds). No peripheral postings mean all work is centralized in the massive Chitrakoot campus.
- Academics: Weekly classes are standard, though they may be suspended during the height of the camp season when surgical volume takes priority.
PERSONAL OPINION
Sadguru Chitrakoot is arguably the “Phaco Mecca” of North-Central India. If you want to graduate with “Iron Hands” and the ability to operate on any cataract—no matter how hard or complicated—this is the place. It requires a 3-year commitment, but the trade-off is reaching a level of surgical independence that most 18-month programs cannot match. You exit not just as a fellow, but as a seasoned surgeon ready for any high-volume setup.
