NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital (SGLEH), Sevoke Road, Siliguri, West Bengal
(A premier tertiary trust hospital in North Bengal. Established in 1981, it has evolved into a massive regional hub performing over 33,000 surgeries annually, with a growing emphasis on high-end vitreoretinal care for the North Bengal, Sikkim, and Nepal regions.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Year 1: ₹45,000
- Year 2: ₹55,000
- Selection Process: Unlike most Aravind or SN branches, selection here is streamlined. Vacancies are often posted on LinkedIn; candidates are shortlisted based on their CV and a final interview with the Head of the Retina Department.
- Intake: Typically 2 fellows per session.
DURATION
24 Months (2 Years)
- Exam Status: Currently, there are no formal entrance or exit exams, making it a more “continuous evaluation” style program compared to trust-based national exams.
HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-On (The “Early Starter” Advantage)
- Timeline: This is one of the few places where you can get into the OT early. Depending on your rapport with the consultants and your basic manual dexterity, hands-on for retinal steps can start as early as the 1st or 2nd month.
- Variety: You are trained in the full spectrum of VR surgery, including RRD, TRD, and Macular holes.
- Cataract Training: While this is a VR fellowship, the hospital uses its high-volume cataract load to keep VR fellows proficient. On “Cataract Fridays,” fellows may be called to operate on the excess social/camp list, primarily performing SICS. Phaco training is not guaranteed but may be allotted on request if the fellow shows high aptitude.
2. Clinical Exposure & Diagnostics
- Breadth: Very good. Beyond routine medical retina (Lasers/Injections), you get significant exposure to Uveitis and Ocular Oncology cases.
- ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity): Fellows are thoroughly trained in ROP Screening and staging. However, ROP lasers are typically handled by the consultants, and independent hands-on for neonates is rare.
3. Work Culture & Schedule
- Environment: Noted for being non-toxic and professional. The workload is balanced, and the department has a supportive academic vibe.
- Timings: Standard hospital hours, though extended during OT days.
- Duties: * Night Duty: ~2 per week (Shared with PGs).
- Sunday Duty: On a rotational basis.
- Academics: Structured with weekly specialty classes and case presentations.
PERSONAL OPINION
SGLEH Siliguri is a “Rising Star” in VR fellowships. It offers a unique middle ground: it has the high patient volume of a charitable trust (like Aravind) but with the early surgical hands-on often found in private setups. It is the ideal choice for a candidate who is already a confident cataract surgeon and wants to dive into the posterior segment immediately without the 6-month “observation-only” period common in other top-tier institutes.
