HONEST REVIEW
1. The “Experienced Surgeon” Requirement
- Pre-requisite: This is a high-threshold program. For the short-term Phaco modules (3 and 6 months), the institute specifically looks for surgeons who are already proficient in SICS—ideally those who have performed 1,000+ SICS cases.
- Strict Screening: They do not accept “novice” surgeons for the short-term Phaco track. If you have only a few hundred cases under your belt, you will be redirected to their Long-Term IOL Fellowship instead.
- Application Requirement: You are often required to submit a recent surgical recording of your SICS or Phaco cases as part of the application process.
2. Training Methodology & Facilities
- Wet Lab: The hospital offers a state-of-the-art wet lab where trainees practice on Cadibree eyes. You are required to demonstrate proficiency on the machine here before being cleared for live human surgery.
- Supervision: All surgeries are performed under the direct guidance of Senior Consultants until you reach a level of “individual confidence.”
- Academics: Includes didactic lectures covering Phaco Dynamics, newer technologies, and management of challenging cases (hard nuclei, small pupils).
- Post-Op Review: A robust system where every case you operate is reviewed the following day by a senior consultant to track outcomes and wound integrity.
3. Clinical & Surgical Volume
- The “Lions” Advantage: As a high-volume charitable trust, the patient inflow is immense. The hospital performs over 30,000 surgeries annually, ensuring that if you meet their skill criteria, the surgical material is never in short supply.
PERSONAL OPINION
Siliguri Greater Lions is the “Pro-Level Transition Hub.” It is not a place to learn your first incision; it is a place to master the machine if you are already a high-speed SICS surgeon. The 1,000-case requirement for Phaco training ensures that the faculty only spends time on “machine mechanics” rather than basic tissue handling. It is the ideal choice for surgeons from North-East India or Nepal who want top-tier Phaco skills without traveling to South India.
