HONEST REVIEW
- Mentorship: The fellowship is under the direct guidance of Dr. Jitendra Jethani, a highly respected authority in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismology. He is noted for his patient-centric approach and exceptional teaching ability.
- Core Focus: This is a specialized program focusing intensely on Myopia Control and Squint (Strabismus) management. It is ideal for those wanting to master the nuances of pediatric refractive errors and ocular alignment.
- Clinical Workflow:
- Weekdays: Fellows manage the OPD alongside Dr. Jethani from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM.
- Wednesdays: Rotations at the clinic’s charitable branch for independent squint screening and surgical listing.
- Surgical Hands-on: OT training follows a structured pedagogical curve. Fellows begin with small surgical steps and progress toward full cases. Independent squint surgery is typically achieved by the 6th or 7th month of the program.
- ROP Exposure: Fellows participate in ROP screenings; however, therapeutic interventions such as ROP lasers are typically performed by senior consultants.
- Limitations: The clinic does not manage general pediatric procedures like NLD probing or pediatric ocular trauma.
- Work Culture: The environment is professional, non-toxic, and maintains a manageable pace.
- Logistics & Duties: Accommodation is not provided. A major advantage for work-life balance is the absence of mandatory night calls or emergency duties.
PERSONAL OPINION
This is a “Niche Specialty” fellowship. If your goal is to become an expert in the growing field of myopia management and a confident squint surgeon, this program is excellent. Dr. Jethani’s academic pedigree (Aravind/University of Wisconsin alumnus) ensures a high standard of clinical reasoning. However, if you are looking for a “Comprehensive Pediatric” program that includes trauma and lacrimal work, you may find the scope here too specialized.
