HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Accreditation: This is an RGUHS-affiliated program. Candidates must pass a university-conducted MCQ entrance exam and a subsequent interview at BMCRI. A formal university exit exam is mandatory for the completion of the fellowship.
- Clinical Exposure: Being a premier government referral center, the variety of corneal pathology is immense. Fellows manage everything from rare corneal dystrophies and severe chemical injuries to advanced microbial keratitis.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cornea): Excellent for Therapeutic Penetrating Keratoplasty (TPK). Fellows get significant hands-on early in the program. Exposure to Optical Keratoplasties is provided but is lower in volume compared to TPKs.
- Surgical Limitations:
- Lamellar Surgery: Training is primarily observational. Fellows assist in DALK/DSEK but rarely get independent hands-on.
- Refractive Surgery: Very limited exposure; hands-on is unlikely.
- Cataract Training: Extremely limited for cornea fellows. Expect roughly one SICS case every 1–2 weeks only in the final 6 months. No Phacoemulsification training is provided.
- Academics & Environment: There are no formal daily theory classes; the program relies on self-motivated learning. However, the sheer volume of cases provides a “living textbook” experience.
- Work-Life Balance: Follows government hospital protocols with relaxed hours, ample public holidays, and no high-pressure private-sector “targets.” It is ideal for those who prefer a steady, predictable pace.
PERSONAL OPINION
Minto is the place to be if you want to become a “Cornea Clinician” and a master of managing corneal emergencies and infections. The prestige of the BMCRI/Minto brand is significant in South India. It is best suited for self-directed learners who aren’t concerned about Phaco numbers but want to see the rarest of the rare in corneal pathology.
