NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Susrut Eye Foundation & Research Centre, Berhampore (Murshidabad), West Bengal
(The Berhampore branch is a key surgical hub within the Susrut network, designed to cater to a massive semi-urban and rural patient demographic. It is highly regarded for its high-volume “step-by-step” surgical training model.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Stipend: Consistent with the Susrut network (ranging between ₹80,000 – ₹90,000 for long-term fellows in 2026).
- Selection Process: Interview-based, often conducted at the Salt Lake (Main) campus.
- Intake: Periodic, based on institutional vacancies and community outreach needs.
DURATION
12 to 24 Months (Standard Long-Term Track)
HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Training (The “Step-by-Step” Guidance)
- Intensity: This branch is ideal for candidates who felt “surgically under-exposed” during residency. The primary focus here is clinical and surgical confidence-building.
- Methodology: Consultants provide meticulous, step-by-step guidance. A unique feature is the Surgical Video Review—fellows are encouraged to record their surgeries, which consultants then review to point out specific areas for improvement.
- Wet Lab: Strong emphasis on foundational skills. Fellows undergo rigorous Suturing Training in the wet lab under the regular monitoring of senior consultants.
2. Mentorship & Peer Learning
- Involvement: Mentorship is primarily Physician-led. Unlike some high-volume centers where optometrists may assist in basic training, Susrut Berhampore ensures consultants personally teach the fellows.
- Peer Support: There is a culture of senior-to-junior knowledge transfer. Senior Fellows frequently step in to assist or guide junior and “Paid Track” fellows in the OT.
- The Optometrist Rule: Optometrists are strictly excluded from physician training. They may only guide “Paid Fellows” in the wet lab if they themselves have been previously certified/trained by an ophthalmologist.
3. Clinical Workflow
- Environment: Supportive and educational. The consultants are described as encouraging rather than intimidating, fostering a “safe to learn” atmosphere.
- Exposure: High volume of pathology from across the Murshidabad district, providing a broad understanding of both common and neglected ocular conditions.
PROS & CONS (BERHAMPORE BRANCH)
| PROS | CONS |
| Surgical Growth: Specifically fixes “low-residency” hands-on gaps. | Location: Semi-urban setting; might be less “posh” than Kolkata Salt Lake. |
| Video Feedback: High-tech approach to refining surgical maneuvers. | Intensity: High patient volume leads to a busy clinical schedule. |
| Peer Mentoring: Excellent support from senior fellows. | Infrastructure: Slightly older facility compared to the Rajarhat/Main centers. |
PERSONAL OPINION
Susrut Berhampore is a “Surgical Finishing School.” It is arguably one of the best branches for a trainee who is technically sound but lacks the “volume confidence” to operate independently. The consultant-led video reviews ensure that you don’t just “do cases,” but that you do them precisely. If you can handle the busy outreach environment, you will emerge as a very robust, independent surgeon.
