(A premier high-volume tertiary care center within the Aravind Eye Care System, known for standardized surgical protocols and clinical excellence.)
STIPEND
- Year 1: ₹40,000
- Year 2: ₹50,000
- Financial Policy: Competitive for the region; reflects the significant clinical and surgical contribution expected from a senior fellow.
DURATION
24 Months (2 Years)
- Rotation: 6 Months in General Ophthalmology + 18 Months in the Glaucoma Department.
HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Admission is via personal interview. Intake is highly dynamic—new fellows may join as frequently as every alternate month to maintain the “pipeline” as senior fellows exit.
- Surgical Hands-on (The “Aravind” Ladder):
- SICS: You begin operating during the 3rd month of your General Ophthalmology posting. You will master high-volume SICS before specializing.
- Trabeculectomy: Exceptional hands-on for both plain Trabeculectomies and combined SICS-Trabs. Most fellows perform approximately 40 cases.
- Phacoemulsification: Integrated into the final 5–6 months of the fellowship. Expect to perform an average of 40 Phaco cases.
- Advanced Procedures: High clinical exposure (++) to AGV (Ahmed Glaucoma Valve) and MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery). Hands-on is more conservative, typically involving 1 AGV and about 4–5 MIGS cases toward the end of the tenure.
- Clinical & Laser Exposure:
- OPD Volume: Massive. You will encounter every possible textbook case of primary, secondary, and congenital glaucomas.
- Lasers: Very “liberal” hands-on policy for YAG PI, SLT, and Cyclophotocoagulation.
- Work Culture & Schedule:
- Timings: Rigorous and disciplined (7:30 AM – 7:30 PM).
- Duties: Night calls once a month; Sunday duty once every 3–6 months. However, outreach camps and post-operative rounds often occupy other Sundays.
- Academics: Strong academic environment; fellows participate in regular classes and grand rounds alongside DNB residents and consultants.
PERSONAL OPINION
Aravind Pondicherry is a “Clinical & Filtration Powerhouse.” It is the ideal program for someone who wants to reach “Aravind-level” efficiency in Trabeculectomy while gaining exposure to the future of the field (MIGS). While the work hours are long and the pace is relentless, the trade-off is graduating with an unmatched diagnostic “gut feeling” for glaucoma. It is a “rugged” program that prepares you for both high-volume charitable work and sophisticated private practice.
