NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Susrut Eye Foundation & Research Centre, Salt Lake (Main Campus), Kolkata
(A premier tertiary eye care and research institute in Eastern India, known for its high clinical volume and its role as a major training hub for both national and international candidates.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: ₹90,000 (One of the highest VR stipends in India as of 2026).
- Paid Track Option: Occasionally offers a 1-year “Paid Surgical VR” track for approx. ₹6 Lakhs (No stipend).
- Selection Process: Interview-based. Intake is “on-need” and somewhat random depending on vacancies.
- Intake: Typically 1–3 fellows per session.
DURATION & BOND
- Standard Fellowship: 24 Months (2 Years).
- The Bond Question: Officially, a 3rd-year bond is mentioned, with a preference for local doctors or those willing to stay. However, recent reports suggest the bond is not rigidly enforced; fellows can often leave after 2 years by intimating management.
- Note: Clarify the “No Bond” rumor during your selection interview.
HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-On (The “Step-Ladder” Progression)
- Timeline: The early phase is dedicated to Medical Retina (Diagnostics, Investigations, and high-volume Intravitreal Injections).
- Surgical Steps: Progression is gradual. You start with Core Vitrectomy, moving to Nucleus Drop cases from the social/charity segment.
- Advanced Autonomy: Toward the end of the 2 years, fellows typically graduate with the ability to perform independent Macular Hole and RD surgeries.
- Cataract Training: Strictly None. There is zero Phaco or SICS hands-on in this track.
2. Medical Retina & Lasers
- Volume: You will get enough Retinal Lasers and Anti-VEGF injections to become “bored and very confident.” You are eventually given independent charge of the laser room.
- Clinical Exposure: Excellent variety. Depending on the consultant, you will experience either “Deep-Dive” clinics (30 pts/day) or “High-Velocity” clinics (100 pts/day), giving you a balanced perspective on both academic and rush-hour practice.
- ROP: This is a weak point. There is minimal ROP exposure; you may screen a few cases, but there is effectively no surgical or laser hands-on for neonates.
3. Work Culture & Academics
- Environment: Non-toxic and “borderline hectic”—more demanding than residency but usually finishing by 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM.
- Academics: Greatly improved. The Retina department now conducts its own specialized classes that are reported to be of higher quality than the general DNB sessions.
- Duties: * Night Calls: ~1–2 per month (Shared with DNBs; usually 1–5 patients per night).
- Postings: Rotations between the Salt Lake (Main) and Berhampore centers.
PERSONAL OPINION
Susrut Kolkata is a “Financial & Surgical Powerhouse.” The ₹90,000 stipend paired with independent Macular Hole surgery by Year 2 makes it one of the most attractive VR programs in North India. While the lack of ROP is a drawback, the clinical volume and the supportive, non-toxic environment more than compensate. It is ideal for a candidate who is already a confident cataract surgeon and wants to focus exclusively on high-end posterior segment surgery.
