NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Disha Eye Hospital, Barrackpore, West Bengal
(The flagship branch of the Disha network and a premier center for corneal services in Eastern India, led by the renowned Dr. Samar K. Basak.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: Competitive for the region (Standardized across Disha branches for 2026).
- Selection Process: Direct interview with Dr. Samar Basak.
- Note: Unlike other branches, the Barrackpore center focuses exclusively on Cornea; no other sub-specialty fellowships are offered here.
DURATION
12 to 24 Months
- Variable Tenure: The length of the fellowship is not fixed. It is decided during the interview based on the candidate’s prior experience.
- Fresh Post-Graduates: Typically required to commit to 2 years.
- Experienced Surgeons: May be offered a 1-year fast-track module.
HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-On (The Keratoplasty Stronghold)
- Technique Focus: This is a pure Cornea fellowship. There is zero Phaco or Refractive hands-on.
- Wet Lab: Training is highly structured. You must clear a rigorous Wet Lab phase first. Only when the Head of Department is satisfied with your manual dexterity do you move to the live OT list.
- Volume: Despite dealing with private patients (no “camp” cases), fellows can expect an impressive 50–100 Penetrating Keratoplasties (PK).
- Lamellar Surgery: While the center is a pioneer in DALK and DSAEK/DMEK, fellows primarily observe these advanced procedures. Independent hands-on is generally not part of the standard curriculum.
2. Clinical Exposure & Eye Banking
- The “Eye Bank” Edge: Disha Barrackpore houses one of India’s most efficient eye banks (Prova Eye Bank). This program is unique in providing deep insights into Eye Bank Management, tissue harvesting, and preservation—essential for anyone looking to set up an eye bank in their own practice.
- Diagnostics: Excellent exposure to corneal topography, tomography, and anterior segment imaging.
- Refractive: The final month includes a rotation to observe refractive surgeries, but it is strictly for clinical orientation.
3. Work Culture
- Environment: Academic and professional. Mentorship from Dr. Samar Basak is a significant draw, as he is one of the most respected corneal surgeons in the country.
- Duties: Clinical work is intensive, focusing on medical management of ulcers and ocular surface disorders alongside surgical training.
PERSONAL OPINION
Disha Barrackpore is the “Keratoplasty Finishing School” of the East. It is the best choice for a surgeon who is already a confident cataract surgeon and wants to specialize solely in Cornea. If you are looking for Phaco-Refractive skills, this is the wrong program. However, if your goal is to master PK and learn how to run a world-class Eye Bank, the mentorship here is unrivaled.
