NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Arasan Eye Hospital, Erode, Tamil Nadu
(A high-volume tertiary care hospital known for its strong community outreach program and dedicated DNB training center in Western Tamil Nadu.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: Competitive for the region (Standardized with DNB scales; subject to 2026 updates).
- Selection Process: Conducted on a “need basis” rather than a fixed calendar. Selection typically involves a personal interview with the Chief Surgeon.
- Intake: Variable; usually 1–2 fellows based on departmental vacancy.
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
- Extension Policy: If surgical milestones (especially Phaco) are not met within 18 months, the hospital may suggest staying for an additional year as a Junior Consultant/Senior Resident to complete the training.
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Hands-on (The “SICS First” Model):
- Timeline: The first 2 months are purely clinical. Surgical training begins in the 3rd month with SICS.
- SICS Volume: Fellows typically perform around 400 SICS cases. Your progression is strictly monitored; speed and tissue handling are the primary metrics for moving to the next level.
- Phacoemulsification: This is the most variable part of the program. Phaco is officially introduced only in the last 4 months.
- The “Chief” Dynamic: Your rapport with the Chief Surgeon is crucial. While the average fellow gets about 55 Phacos, some may not get any if their SICS proficiency or professional rapport is deemed insufficient.
- Clinical Exposure & Workload:
- Intensity: Very hectic. The workday spans 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
- Duties: Fellows share a heavy call schedule with DNB residents, including night duties and two mandatory working Sundays every month.
- Academics:
- Self-Directed: Formal academic sessions are limited. Most learning is through high-volume clinical exposure and self-study. Fellows are expected to stay updated on their own initiative.
PERSONAL OPINION
Arasan Eye Hospital is a “Surgical Grit” fellowship. It is ideally suited for a candidate who is hardworking, thrives in a high-pressure environment, and needs to build a solid foundation in SICS volume. It is not a “corporate” refractive experience; rather, it’s a “trust-style” training ground. If you are a quick learner who can build a strong professional relationship with your seniors, you can exit with very respectable numbers, but be prepared for the possibility of an extension if you want to master Phaco.
