HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: The program is relatively new (started in 2023). It is highly selective, typically taking only one fellow.
- Note: Intake has been intermittent; after the inaugural 2023 fellow, there was no new intake in 2024 or 2025.
- Mentorship: Fellows primarily tag with Dr. Ganesh Pillai, a senior and highly regarded retina consultant. The first year involves heavy “over-the-shoulder” learning in the OPD before transitioning to independent clinics.
- Surgical Hands-on:
- Timeline: Intravitreal injections begin in the 1st month. By months 2–4, fellows progress to making ports and performing Silicone Oil Removals (SOR).
- Progression: Training is modular and “steps-based.” Independent cases for RD and Macular Hole (excluding ILM peeling) are typically granted in the final 3–4 months, strictly based on demonstrated skill.
- TRD: Tractional Retinal Detachments are reserved for the very end of the fellowship.
- Medical Retina & Lasers: * The “Corporate” Constraint: Because most patients are “paying” private clients, they often insist on the senior consultant performing the laser. Fellows mostly get hands-on for retinal lasers via camp cases or when available.
- ROP: Very minimal exposure; the center is not currently a primary ROP referral or screening hub.
- Cataract Training: Not included. However, if a fellow is already proficient in Phaco/SICS, they may be allotted a few “refresher” cataract cases per month.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Hours: Corporate timings (10:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM).
- Environment: Hectic due to high corporate volumes but noted to be non-toxic.
- Duties: Excellent work-life balance regarding calls; there are no night duties and no peripheral postings. Sunday duties occur 1–2 times per month.
- Academics: Structured with two regular classes per week.
PERSONAL OPINION
ASG Bhopal is a “Premium Corporate” fellowship. It is ideal for a candidate who values a high stipend, no bond, and no night duties while learning in a high-tech, modern environment. While the laser volume and ROP exposure are lower than in charitable institutes like Aravind or Sankara, the one-on-one mentorship with Dr. Ganesh Pillai provides a very “polished” clinical perspective. It is a great “finishing school” for someone aiming for a career in corporate ophthalmology or high-end private practice.
