HONEST REVIEW
- The Unique Hybrid: This is a rare fellowship that officially combines Oculoplasty and Neuro-Ophthalmology. Since these fields frequently overlap (e.g., thyroid eye disease, orbital tumors affecting the optic nerve, ptosis vs. myasthenia), this combination provides a superior diagnostic edge.
- Selection: Intake is usually limited to one fellow at a time. The process involves an informal interview with the Director and the Sub-specialty Head. It is highly recommended to apply 3–6 months before the current fellow’s tenure ends.
- Surgical Exposure (Oculoplasty):
- Strengths: Adequate hands-on for all common procedures including DCR, Ptosis correction, and Lid repairs. You get good exposure to lid and lacrimal malignancies.
- Gaps: Minimal hands-on for endoscopic surgeries or complex bony orbital decompressions/fractures. Intraocular tumors (like Retinoblastoma) are managed by the VR department.
- Aesthetics: Botox and blepharoplasty are performed, but patient volume in this category is relatively lower than in purely private urban centers.
- Neuro-Ophthalmology Exposure: * The clinical variety is vast. However, the management approach is often non-standard (not strictly “textbook”), requiring the fellow to be proactive in self-education and literature review.
- Cataract Training: * This is a “surgical bonus.” Fellows can perform 250+ SICS over two years and around 20 Phacos in the final month. Training is consultant-dependent; building a good rapport with your mentors is key to securing higher numbers.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Hours: Standard 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
- On-Call: Approx. 4 night duties per month. In the initial months, you act as the first call (hectic); later, as the second call, you get to operate on open globe injuries and corneal tears.
- Peripheral Posting: One day a week is spent at a peripheral center.
PERSONAL OPINION
Little Flower Angamaly offers a high-value fellowship for those who want to be “The Complete Specialist.” While it has some lacunae in advanced orbital surgery, the combination of Neuro-Ophthal clinical depth and Oculoplasty surgical skills—plus the high volume of SICS—makes you exceptionally versatile for both corporate and private practice. It is a “workhorse” fellowship where your growth is limited only by your own initiative.
