HONEST REVIEW
- Selection: 2–3 fellows are taken every 6 months. Selection involves a written MCQ exam followed by an interview focusing on standard clinical retina (Kanski-level preparation is recommended).
- The “Seniority” Timeline:
- Months 1–3: High-volume B-Scan diagnostics and hands-on intravitreal injections.
- Months 3–6: Rotations across different NN centers for OPD and laser training. Expect long hours (8 AM – 8 PM) during this “junior” phase.
- Month 8 onwards: You transition to “Senior” status. You are allotted a fixed center and rotate under different consultants every 1.5–2 months. Work hours stabilize to 8 AM – 6:30 PM.
- Surgical Hands-on: Surgical training starts around the 8-month mark. You receive guided steps and hands-on exposure to almost all vitreoretinal procedures. While you graduate with high surgical familiarity, total independence may require a post-fellowship “refining” stint at a high-volume center.
- Clinical Breadth: Excellent. You see a vast range of pathologies, including rare genetic and inflammatory conditions. The program includes dedicated 1-month rotations in Uvea and ROP (observational/medical).
- Research & Academics: Very strong. Consultants actively encourage and facilitate paper presentations and posters at national and international conferences.
- Work Culture & Duties: * On-Call: “Fellow Duty” lasts 1.5 days at a stretch once a month (increasing to alternate months as a senior). Retinal emergencies at night are generally few.
- Sundays: Duty is required roughly every alternate week.
- Environment: Hectic and demanding, but professionally rewarding and non-toxic.
PERSONAL OPINION
Narayana Nethralaya is an academic powerhouse. This fellowship is best suited for candidates who want a balanced mix of high-end diagnostics, surgical steps, and a strong research profile. The “NN Brand” significantly boosts your CV for corporate and academic consultant roles. However, be prepared for the heavy administrative/data work that comes with their research-driven model.
