HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Admission is through an RGUHS-affiliated entrance exam followed by an interview. The program typically inducts four fellows per session, once a year (usually between June and August).
- Clinical Exposure: Being a premier tertiary government center, the volume and variety of cases are vast. You will encounter everything from basic diabetic vitreous hemorrhage (VH) to complex tractional retinal detachments (TRD), dropped nuclei, and rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD).
- Surgical Progression:
- Initial Phase: Surgical steps are introduced early, typically within 2–3 months of joining.
- Advanced Training: Senior consultants provide hands-on training for high-stakes procedures like dropped IOL management and complex detachments.
- Phacoemulsification: While this is a VR fellowship, fellows may occasionally get Phaco cases, provided they already possess baseline competency.
- Specialty Postings: Includes dedicated ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) screenings and lasers, ensuring comprehensive training in pediatric retina.
- Schedule & Duties: * Hours: Hectic but professionally managed and non-toxic.
- Duties: Night calls depend on the number of current fellows but usually average once or twice a week.
- Travel: No peripheral postings; outreach camps are rare, allowing you to focus on the main hospital’s clinical load.
- Academics: Features both a university entrance and a formal exit exam.
PERSONAL OPINION
Minto’s VR program is widely regarded as one of the best government fellowships in South India. It offers a rare combination of high surgical volume, diverse pathology, and a substantial stipend. It is ideally suited for surgeons who want to become independent in both medical and surgical retina in a high-pressure but supportive academic environment.
