HONEST REVIEW
- Selection: Intake is 1–2 fellows per session via a competitive MCQ examination and personal interview. There is currently no formal exit exam.
- Year 1 (IOL Focus): The first quarter is at the main Daryaganj center focusing on SICS. The remaining 9 months are spent in peripheral centers (potentially in Haryana, Bihar, or Uttarakhand) performing high-volume SICS and Phacoemulsification.
- Year 2 (Cornea Focus): Formal cornea training at the main center. Fellows are mentored by senior consultants in advanced procedures, including TPK, Optical PK, DSEK, SLET, and AMG.
- Year 3 (Independent Management): Fellows are posted to one of the five major peripheral centers as the lead Cornea Consultant. This year focuses on independent clinical decision-making, posting cases, and performing surgeries autonomously. The final three months provide intensive hands-on Refractive training (LASIK, PRK, and occasional SMILE).
- Clinical Exposure: Exceptional. Due to the charitable nature and vast network, fellows encounter almost every variety of corneal pathology and complex cataract.
- Work Culture: Professional and non-toxic. Hours are typically 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
- Main Center: Night/Sunday duties once a month.
- Periphery: Night calls every 3–4 nights; Sunday rounds are required only if there is a Saturday OT.
- Academics: Strong structured learning with three weekly classes (two general, one cornea-specific).
PERSONAL OPINION
This is widely considered one of the “complete” fellowships in North India. The 3-year duration is a significant commitment, but the trade-off is total surgical and clinical independence. By the third year, you are essentially functioning as a junior consultant. It is ideal for those who want to master the “bread and butter” of both high-volume cataract and advanced corneal transplantation. The only downside is the unpredictability of peripheral postings in the first year, which can involve significant travel.
