DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Inducts one fellow per session, twice annually (January and July cycles), via a formal interview process.
- Clinical Exposure: Offers extensive clinical depth with a high volume of Glaucoma diagnostics and “countless” opportunities for laser procedures, including Peripheral Iridotomy (PI). The department encourages self-driven learning across a diverse range of clinical cases.
- Surgical Progression: Surgical training is peer-supported, with senior fellows and consultants providing hands-on instruction for basic steps. Trabeculectomy (Trab) training initiates as soon as the fellow demonstrates SICS proficiency.
- Cataract Integration: Unlike many pure specialty tracks, this fellowship includes robust Phacoemulsification training. Fellows share the cataract OT pool, receiving 1–2 Phaco cases per OT day during the final six months of the program.
- Advanced Surgical Scope: Training covers complex anterior segment scenarios, including small pupils, CTR fixation, PXF management, and brown/mature cataracts. While hands-on MIGS is not currently provided, fellows receive significant opportunities for independent GATT (Gonioscopy-assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy) procedures.
- Academics & Culture: Maintains a disciplined academic environment with mandatory 8:00 AM daily classes led by senior consultants. The work atmosphere is described as hectic but professional and non-toxic.
- Outreach & Duties: There are no peripheral postings. Outreach camp duties are minimal, occurring only once or twice a month depending on the current trainee count.
PERSONAL OPINION
This is a highly balanced fellowship for those who want to specialize in Glaucoma without losing their surgical edge in complex cataracts. It is particularly strong for candidates interested in angle-based surgeries like GATT, which are becoming increasingly relevant. It is best suited for a resident who wants a solid, well-rounded foundation in both medical and surgical Glaucoma management in a supportive environment.
