NAME OF THE INSTITUTE: Mahatme Eye Hospital, Nagpur
- DURATION: 18-24 months for Comprehensive
- HONEST REVIEW:
- Surgical Accessibility: The primary concern at this center is the restricted access to cataract surgery. A significant portion of Phacoemulsification cases is diverted to consultants, many of whom are still in their own learning or refinement phases, leaving inadequate volume for the fellows.
- Training Structure: The program currently lacks a structured surgical ladder. Hands-on opportunities for fellows are frequently superseded by the needs of the permanent staff, leading to a deficit in primary surgeon experience.
- Workload Distribution: Fellows are predominantly assigned to routine clinical duties and non-surgical administrative tasks, which may not contribute significantly to advanced surgical competence.
- Professional Environment: The training experience is often described as mentally taxing and discouraging due to the lack of transparent case allocation and the prioritized learning curve of the senior staff over the trainees.
- PERSONAL OPINION: This fellowship is currently not recommended for candidates prioritizing high-volume Phacoemulsification training. It may only be suitable for those looking for clinical diagnostic exposure in a high-volume outpatient setting, but surgical expectations should be kept very low.
