HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-On (The “Aptitude-Based” Progression)
- Timeline: You start receiving surgical steps almost from the beginning. However, there is no fixed calendar for moving from SICS to Phaco; it depends entirely on your demonstrated manual dexterity.
- Phacoemulsification: Once you are cleared for Phaco, you typically start with 2–3 cases per week.
- Advanced Training: Exposure to Topical Phaco is a highlight—most graduating fellows achieve proficiency in local-anesthesia-free surgery. However, training in advanced cataracts (Small pupil, PXF) and complication management (Anterior Vitrectomy) is consultant-dependent and not guaranteed for everyone.
- Minor Procedures: As a teaching hospital, you get excellent hands-on for YAG Capsulotomy, Peripheral Iridotomy (PI), B-Scan USG, and Retinal Lasers.
2. Clinical Exposure & Rotations
- Tertiary Advantage: Since SN Kolkata is a major referral hub, you will see a high volume of complicated cases that are rarely seen in general private practice.
- Rotations: You rotate through all sub-specialty departments, ensuring a balanced clinical foundation.
- Refractive: Strictly not included in the Comprehensive track.
3. Work Culture & Logistics
- Environment: Slightly hectic but noted for being non-toxic. A unique “Student Committee” composed of senior faculty exists to address any workplace grievances for fellows and PGs.
- The “Shuttle” Challenge: Fellows must move between 2–3 different branches in Kolkata (approx. 8–12 km apart) depending on their posting. This travel can be burdensome and frequent.
- Duties: * Night Calls (7 PM – 7 AM): ~2–3 per month.
- Ward/Emergency (7 AM – 7 PM): ~2–3 per month.
- MESU Camps: You may be posted for the Mobile Eye Surgical Unit (MESU) camps once or twice a year, often in other states.
PERSONAL OPINION
Sankara Nethralaya Kolkata is the “Academician’s Choice.” It is the ideal program for someone who values the SN Brand Name and wants a high-quality, structured clinical environment. While the Phaco volume (2-3/week) is lower than some “surgical factories,” the focus is on surgical quality and topical transitions. The mandatory Chennai posting is a significant bonus, providing exposure to one of the world’s best ophthalmic ecosystems.
