- Year 2: ₹50,000
- Financial Policy: Competitive for the region; reflects the fellow’s integration into a busy quaternary care system.

24 Months (2 Years)
- Rotation: 6 months in the General Ophthalmology department + 18 months in the Cornea department.
HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Selection is conducted via personal interview. The intake is described as “random and frequent,” with new fellows potentially joining every three months. It is common to see several fellows finishing their tenure simultaneously.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- SICS: Training typically begins in the 3rd month of the General Ophthalmology posting. You can expect to perform a massive volume of 500–1,000 SICS cases before moving to more advanced procedures.
- Phacoemulsification: Now officially included due to the increased 2-year duration. However, there is no fixed number of cases promised. Fellows generally only start Phaco in the last 3 months after mastering SICS.
- Cornea Surgical Hands-on:
- Standard Procedures: Excellent hands-on for AMG, Pterygium excision, and Corneal tear repairs.
- Keratoplasty: Fellows are generally promised a minimum of 15 Penetrating Keratoplasties (PKs), though the exact number depends on individual skill and speed.
- Lamellar & Refractive: High observational exposure. While independent hands-on for DSEK/DALK is rare (often limited to surgical steps for senior fellows), fellows receive strong training in Refractive workups. You may get hands-on for 1–2 PRKs toward the end. Note: The center primarily focuses on LASIK and PRK (no SMILE).
- Clinical Exposure: Exceptional. The patient load is very high, offering exposure to the full spectrum of corneal infections, dystrophies, and ocular surface disorders.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Intensity: Described as a very hectic department.
- Calls: Night duties roughly once a month.
- Sundays: Duty once every 3–6 months, though other Sundays are often occupied by outreach camps or post-operative rounds.
- Academics: Strong academic foundation with regular classes and clinical case discussions.
PERSONAL OPINION
Aravind Pondicherry is a “Surgical Finishing School” of the highest order. It is ideal for an ophthalmologist who wants to reach an elite level of efficiency in SICS and PKs. While the wait for Phaco training is long (until the end of the fellowship), the sheer volume of 1,000+ SICS ensures that your microscopic tissue handling becomes second nature. It is a grueling, hectic program, but it transforms you into a highly confident, “Aravind-style” high-volume surgeon.
