NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Laxmi Eye Institute, Panvel, Navi Mumbai
(A long-standing academic hub in Maharashtra, known for its strong focus on Cataract surgery and MUHS-affiliated training programs.)
STIPEND & FEES
- Monthly Remuneration: Approximately ₹30,000 (for Comprehensive Fellows).
- Note: DNB residents at the same institute receive a higher government-mandated stipend (approx. ₹48,000+), but fellowship stipends are internally managed.
- Fees (University Track): As a Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) recognized center, university fellows pay roughly ₹75,000 to the institute and ₹25,000 to the University.
- Accommodation: Fellows generally have to arrange their own accommodation in Panvel, though the hospital may assist in finding local PG options.
DURATION
- University Fellowship: 12 Months (1 Year)
- Institutional Comprehensive Fellowship: 18 Months (1.5 Years)
- Note: Selection for the university track is merit-based (HSC, UG, and PG marks), while institutional seats are filled on a “need basis.”
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Hands-on (The “Cataract” Focus):
- Timeline: SICS starts early (within 2 weeks). Phacoemulsification training typically begins after 6 months of demonstrating SICS proficiency.
- Volume: You can expect roughly 30–40 Phacos over a one-year period.
- Case Selection: Training is conservative. Fellows are generally allotted “safe” cases (Grade 2 nuclei, well-dilated pupils). Complex cases and complication management are mostly handled by the senior faculty.
- The “OPD-Skip” Phenomenon: A unique aspect reported by trainees is that for weeks at a time, fellows may be posted exclusively in the OT, with minimal to no OPD time. This is excellent for surgical numbers but can lead to gaps in clinical diagnostic follow-up.
- Specialty Exposure:
- Anterior Segment Only: The focus is almost exclusively on cataracts. There is no hands-on for Refractive surgery, Glaucoma (Trabs), or Retina.
- Work Culture & Intensity:
- Atmosphere: Described as both hectic and toxic. The environment is high-pressure, with long working hours and significant physical demands (prolonged standing).
- Duties: Includes mandatory Sunday outreach camps, night calls every 4–5 days, and weekly visits to remote Vision Centres.
- Academics: Weekly clinical meetings (Wednesdays) are the primary formal teaching sessions. Most surgical learning is one-on-one with a dedicated senior faculty member in the OT.
PERSONAL OPINION
Laxmi Eye Institute is a “Phaco-Centric Grind.” It is an excellent place for someone who wants to “break the ice” with Phaco and SICS in a highly structured, high-volume environment. However, the reported toxicity and the narrow focus on simple cataracts mean you may not graduate with the “all-rounder” confidence of other comprehensive programs. It is a solid stepping stone for those who specifically want a University-recognized certificate and a steady flow of basic surgical cases.
