HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-on (The “Tag-Along” Model)
- Phase 1 (Months 1–3): Focuses exclusively on Medical Retina. You gain proficiency in B-Scan ultrasonography, OCT interpretation, and performing Retinal Lasers (PRP, Barrage).
- Phase 2 (Month 4 onwards): Surgical steps begin. The training follows a “tag-along” system where you are posted with a single consultant for two months at a time, shadowing them through OPD and OT.
- Surgical Progression: You primarily receive surgical steps (port making, core vitrectomy, fluid-gas exchange). Independent cases are not guaranteed and are strictly based on the fellow’s manual dexterity and the consultant’s confidence in their skills toward the end of the 18 months.
- Cataract Training: Strictly None. Fellows are expected to focus entirely on the posterior segment.
2. Medical Retina & ROP
- Clinical Exposure: Solid variety of retinal pathologies including diabetic retinopathy, vascular occlusions, and detachments.
- ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity): Exposure is described as “okay.” Fellows get hands-on experience with ROP Lasers, but intravitreal injections in neonates are generally not allotted to trainees.
3. Work Culture & Duties
- Work-Life Balance: Excellent compared to national standards. Timings are typically 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM and the environment is not described as hectic.
- Calls: There are no night calls and no Sunday hospital duties.
- Camps: Mandatory Sunday General Ophthalmology camps. While these are for screening, they are a consistent part of the fellowship obligation.
- Academics: Includes periodic classes and case discussions with the rotating consultants.
PERSONAL OPINION
Netralayam Kolkata is a “Focused Mentorship Hub.” Because there is only one fellow, you don’t have to compete for the consultant’s attention or clinical cases. It is ideal for a candidate who prefers a less hectic, non-toxic environment and is looking for a strong foundation in Medical Retina and surgical steps. However, if your primary goal is high-volume independent surgical “cutting” or if you still need to refine your Phaco skills, this may not be the right fit.
