NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Aravind Eye Hospital, Anna Nagar, Madurai
(The founding headquarters of the Aravind system and one of the world’s highest-volume pediatric eye care centers, renowned for its work in congenital cataract and retinoblastoma.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: ₹40,000 (Year 1) | ₹50,000 (Year 2).
- Selection: National entrance exam followed by a personal interview and clinical observation.
- Note: The department is highly academic but significantly more “hectic” than other Aravind branches due to the massive patient inflow from across South India.
DURATION
24 Months (2 Years)
- Service Posting: Depending on your initial cataract surgical proficiency, you may be posted at a peripheral center for the first 6 months to focus on General OPD and SICS before starting the core specialty track.
HONEST REVIEW
1. Surgical Hands-on (Strabismus & Paediatric Cataract)
- Timeline: Specialty OT typically begins after the 4th month.
- Strabismus Volume: Excellent exposure to Horizontal squints and Inferior Oblique surgeries. Superior Oblique cases are fewer. You are supervised for the first 1–2 cases, then expected to operate with increasing independence.
- Paediatric Cataract: You are guaranteed a minimum of 25 cases (mostly developmental and traumatic).
- Technique: You will master Bimanual I/A, membranectomies, and secondary IOLs.
- The Phaco Gap: There is no adult Phaco training in this track. You get once-weekly SICS slots, but these can be erratic due to OPD surges.
- Advanced Procedures: Access to transpositions or tucks is “luck-based”—dependent on whether they are posted on your specific OT day.
2. Clinical Rotations (The “Full Spectrum” Advantage)
Madurai offers a highly structured rotation system that is more comprehensive than most other branches:
- Neuro-Ophthalmology (1 Month): High-intensity workup and presentation to consultants. You are expected to clear the OPD and cross-check PG cases.
- Orbit & Oculoplasty (2 Weeks): Mainly observational; you may get 1–2 NLD probings if you take the initiative with Medical Officers.
- Low Vision & CVI (2 Weeks): Integrated with the Paediatric clinic; essential for managing Cortical Visual Impairment.
- ROP Screening (2 Weeks): Focused on screening protocols and staging.
3. Work Culture & Duties
- Environment: Extremely Hectic. The workload is heavy, and “internal politics” can occasionally influence OT turn allotments. It is described as mentally draining but professionally rewarding for those who can “ignore the noise.”
- Camps: 1 Cataract camp per month and 2–3 School screening camps during peak months.
- Night Duty: Typically once a month.
4. Academics
- Structure: High. Includes Inter-branch journal clubs every 2 weeks and periodic morning classes specifically for fellows. You are expected to be proactive; “spoon-feeding” is non-existent.
PERSONAL OPINION
Aravind Madurai is a “Clinical Forge.” It is the definitive choice for someone who wants to be a “Complete Paediatric Ophthalmologist.” While the lack of adult Phaco and the high-pressure environment are drawbacks, the Neuro-Ophthalmology and CVI exposure you get here is superior to almost any other branch. You will exit as an exceptionally confident diagnostician who can handle complex pediatric cases that would baffle most generalists.
