HONEST REVIEW
- Clinical Exposure & Volume:
- OPD: Very strong and diverse. You will see every classic retinal pathology, including high-volume medical retina cases (DR, AMD, RVO).
- Intensity: The workload is massive, but the department is noted for having a low toxicity level compared to other high-volume centers.
- Specialty Rotations:
- ROP & Oncology: A unique feature here is the 2-week dedicated training in Uvea, ROP, and Ocular Oncology.
- Screening: Following this rotation, fellows are posted for peripheral ROP screenings, providing extensive experience in identifying and grading pediatric retinal disorders.
- Surgical Hands-on:
- Medical Retina: Excellent numbers for Retinal Lasers and Intravitreal Injections, including hands-on for ROP babies.
- VR Surgery: Training is modular and depends on your skills. You will become confident in “basic” vitrectomies (Vitreous hemorrhage, basic RD).
- The “Advanced” Gap: Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) with complex membranes and Macular Hole surgeries (ILM peeling) are generally not given to fellows; these are usually reserved for senior consultants or those staying on as Medical Officers (MOs).
- Cataract Training: Not officially included. Any cataract experience is usually “off-the-record” during the initial General Ophthalmology posting or peripheral duties.
- Teaching & Mentorship:
- There is no one-on-one mentor; you rotate under different consultants in the OT. This allows you to learn multiple surgical styles but requires more self-initiative to ensure consistent progress.
PERSONAL OPINION
Aravind Coimbatore is an “ROP & Medical Retina Stronghold.” While you might find the surgical numbers for complex macular cases limited compared to Madurai or Pondicherry, the exposure to ROP screening and management is arguably superior. It is a fantastic program for someone who wants to be a well-rounded VR specialist with a specific edge in pediatric retina. The “low-toxicity” environment makes the high clinical volume much more manageable for long-term learning.
