NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Lotus Eye Hospital and Institute, Peelamedu/RS Puram, Coimbatore
(A prominent private eye care chain in South India, recognized for its advanced refractive suite and corporate-style practice management.)
STIPEND & SELECTION
- Monthly Remuneration: Competitive for private institutes in Coimbatore (Typically ₹30,000 – ₹40,000; subject to 2026 updates).
- Selection Criteria: SICS proficiency is mandatory. The institute specifically selects candidates who are already confident in SICS because fellows are expected to supervise DNB postgraduates in the operating theater.
- Intake: Usually 1–2 fellows per session.
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- The “Supervisor” Role: A unique aspect of this fellowship is that you act as the first line of defense for PGs. You are expected to step in and manage “simple” complications like a PCR (Posterior Capsular Rupture) or difficult nucleus prolapse.
- Patient Profile: Fellows who demonstrate high competence in SICS are often given paying patients to operate on, which is rare in many private fellowships.
- Phacoemulsification: The training volume for Phaco is notably less than in “surgical factory” models like Aravind. You primarily start with steps; while you will learn the technique, don’t expect a massive independent case list.
- Surgical Hands-on (Refractive):
- Volume: Ample clinical volume for refractive workups.
- Timeline: Hands-on for laser procedures (LASIK/Femto) is typically provided quite late in the 1.5-year tenure, once the consultants are fully confident in your clinical judgment.
- Procedures:
- Lasers: High volume of YAG Capsulotomies. After 2–3 supervised cases, you are usually cleared to perform them independently.
- Work Culture & Schedule:
- Intensity: Extremely light. This is one of the least hectic fellowships in Coimbatore, making it ideal for those who value work-life balance or wish to study for further exams.
- Duties: Occasional half-day duties on Sundays. No mention of heavy night-call rotations.
- Environment: Professional and corporate, focused on high-end patient interaction.
PERSONAL OPINION
Lotus Coimbatore is a “Clinical Finishing School.” It is not the place to go if you want to learn SICS from scratch or do 500 Phacos. However, it is an excellent choice for a surgeon who is already surgically sound and wants to learn the “art” of refractive surgery and corporate patient management in a relaxed environment. The responsibility of supervising PGs will significantly sharpen your complication-management skills, which is often a missing link in more “protected” fellowship programs.
