NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Aravind Eye Hospital, Pondicherry
(A premier high-volume tertiary care center within the Aravind Eye Care System, known for its standardized surgical protocols and clinical excellence.)
STIPEND
- Year 1: ₹40,000
- Year 2: ₹50,000
- Note: Competitive for the region; covers on-campus or local living expenses comfortably.
DURATION & SELECTION
- Two Tracks: 2 Years or 3 Years (You must opt for one at the time of application).
- The “Waitlist” Reality: Candidates who commit to the 3-year track are often admitted sooner. Those opting for the 2-year program may face a waitlist of up to a year due to high demand and vacancy-based intake.
- Selection: Purely via Personal Interview. Intake happens throughout the year as slots open up.
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Hands-on (The “Aravind” Progression):
- Phase 1 (General): 2-year fellows spend 3 months in General Ophthalmology; 3-year fellows spend a full year there.
- Phase 2 (Medical Retina): Around the 5th or 6th month, you begin performing high volumes of Retinal Lasers and Intravitreal Injections.
- Phase 3 (Surgical Retina): OT starts around the 6th month. Training is modular (steps), but unlike many other academic centers, Aravind Pondicherry allows progression to independent cases, including Macular surgeries and TRD (Tractional Retinal Detachment), provided your tissue handling is exceptional.
- Cataract Training: None. This is a pure VR track.
- Clinical Exposure:
- OPD Volume: Massive. You will see virtually every retinal pathology imaginable.
- Oncology: Limited; seen only occasionally.
- ROP: Exposure is minimal. Training is mostly limited to screening; hands-on for ROP lasers is rarely given to fellows.
- Work Culture & Schedule:
- Intensity: Very hectic. The workday typically runs from 7:30 AM to 7:00 PM.
- Duties: Night calls roughly once a month; Sunday duties once every 3–4 months. Notably, there are no outreach camp duties for VR fellows.
- Academics: Primarily self-learning. There are very few formal scheduled theory classes; learning is predominantly through high-volume clinical and surgical experience.
PERSONAL OPINION
Aravind Pondicherry is widely considered to offer superior surgical hands-on for VR compared to its sister branch in Madurai. It is the ideal program for a “Surgical Purest”—someone who wants to focus 100% on the posterior segment and reach a high level of surgical independence. While you sacrifice cataract training and ROP lasers, you gain “iron hands” for complex vitrectomies. If you are in a hurry to start, the 3-year commitment is your fastest ticket into the department.
