HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Inducts two fellows per year. Selection is via a written MCQ exam followed by a personal interview.
- Surgical Hands-on (Specialty):
- Timeline: Surgical steps are introduced early, often within the first month of joining the department.
- Strabismus (Squint): Excellent hands-on for various types of squints. Most fellows graduate with the ability to manage common squints independently.
- Paediatric Cataract: High-volume center for congenital and developmental cataracts. Independent cases are granted once the consultant is confident in the fellow’s skill level.
- Cataract Training (Adult):
- SICS: Strong foundation in manual small incision cataract surgery, including advanced/complex cases.
- Phacoemulsification: Introduced in the final months. Expect approximately 100 cases. While topical phaco is rare, it may be offered to exceptionally proficient fellows.
- Neuro-Ophthalmology: A unique feature of MMJ is that Neuro-Ophthalmic cases are managed within the Paediatric department. This provides fellows with integrated exposure to optic nerve pathologies, cranial nerve palsies, and pupillary disorders.
- Limitations: There is no ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) exposure in this track.
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Hours: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM.
- Duties: Night duties (once a month) and enucleation calls (1–2 times a month). Sunday emergency duties are rare, though half-days may be required for post-operative rounds.
- Peripheral Postings: Fellows are posted to satellite centers for 1–2 months. These are primarily OPD-focused with limited surgical opportunities.
- Academics: Strong focus on research. Completing papers and presentations is a mandatory requirement for the completion certificate.
PERSONAL OPINION
M.M. Joshi Hubli offers a very well-rounded “Paediatric + Comprehensive” hybrid. Unlike some “super-specialized” programs that completely ignore adult cataracts, MMJ ensures you remain a competent Phaco surgeon (100 cases) while mastering the nuances of Squint and Paediatric Cataracts. The added Neuro-Ophthalmology exposure is a significant bonus for clinical practice. It is ideal for those who wish to set up a specialized practice in tier-2 cities.
